Well....thanks to the counsel of this thread, I was able to book a two room suite in New Orleans last weekend...and they took the points no problem.

This was off the Marriott card. As I have learned more about reward points, my level of sophistication is increasing. I will be transitioning away from the brand specific card in 2016 and going more for points for flights to SLC primarily.

Thanks for the knowledge and insight from this thread during the year.

Nice. Hoping the ability to earn companion pass stays the same leading in to 2017 as well.

Thats why I pulled the trigger now... It seems like the Plus card offering 50k are getting fewer and fewer. Wouldn't be surprised if Chase pulls the promotion and only leaves it on the Premier and Business cards.

If I play it right, like I think I've got it set, I will have companion for 20 months

Can someone give me a quick recap of best cards for my situation. I am planning on flying from NO to NY next year. I have been using IHG card for hotels but was wondering about what cards would be best for airlines. I am considering getting a Marriot card for additional hotels and was wondering if Southwest card is a good choice since my wife will be traveling with me. I know this has been discussed in the past but I am not sure how far back I would need to go. Thanks

I thought they were relatively right sized but this unreliable Internet is making it hard to tell.

Get the chase sapphire preffered if you haven't applied for more than 4 cards in 2 years. It's 50k points right now. That will give you the option to transfer points to SW or United.

Remember the best way to search for NYC flights is to type in "NYC". That will search all 3 LGA, JFK, and EWR.

I recommend the Hyatt card for hotels. 2 free nights anytime anywhere.

You can PayPal somebody(wife) the money at 2.9% and get them to give back.
Personally I would buy gift cards for gas, Amazon, restaurant I frequented, etc.

Did you apply for both cards on same day?

That option hurts my heart as I'm meeting the spend for an Arrival+ and I would normally make those purchases with my Ink Plus for far more points. With that said, I certainly won't miss out on the sign up bonus, so it's a good last ditch.

No, next day. Wasn't questioned about it at all.

That could be due to my score or the amount of money I have through Chase though.

1. Order this card Serve One VIP.
2. Buy Vanilla gift card in $500 denominations at CVS.
3. Go to Family Dollar or Rite Aid and tell clerk you'd like to load your Serve card.

So I'm currently looking into this and I don't see anywhere that states you can use a gift card to load the Serve One. It states that you can load with cash at CVS/Family Dollar/etc... but nothing about loading with a CC or GC.

I know you are able to do it, but is it possible they could be shutting that down?

They're definitely trying their best to shut it down. Just a couple years ago you could walk in to any Walmart and move $1000 in gift cards without any flack. Now that's virtually impossible. I hear Rite Aid is the way to go, but I don't have any close to me. Family Dollar has been hit or miss and they're in the ghettos around Houston, so it's not really worth the hassle of driving around anymore.

What you should do is test the waters first with a smaller $100-200 gift card. That way if it doesn't work at any place you try, you don't have to unload $1k in gift cards.

It has never stated it could be done with a CC or GC on Serve website. I've tried 5 different Family Dollars and 2 different Rite Aids in BR area. Only once was I turned down at a Family Dollar, but it was because the fat lazy clerk told me "we ain't even got that". I argued with her for a minute explaining that I had done it at the store twice before, but no dice.

meh. Not really. They just added Rite Aid, so they're actually expanding opportunities, not limiting them.

Wal-Mart is the only one really limiting it. They were constantly battling and maintaining the awful Kate machines, and the MS abusers were blatantly MSing there. You can't move the kind of money that many of these MSers were in a vehicle that has been flagged for money laundering without throwing up red flags.

Always good advice.

Sorry, by "they" I meant the CC companies like Chase. They're the ones trying to strong arm retailers to quell MS.

The gift card companies/banks, retailers, VISA, AMEX, etc. don't care because they're still make money. Poor Kate...RIP

Yes to Bangkok.

No to Cambodia but "The Touich Restaurant" was very good and the guy who has to be the owner is a real nice guy.

Ha, I did take that legendary piss at Above 11.
