$500, since it's based on calendar year so you come out $50 ahead.

You could buy an airline gift card. That's what I did with my Delta Gold 60k offer with $50 statement credit for Delta purchase. I think I'll get the Prestige in a few months to go with my Premier and then book American.

Ya, you being in Hawaii probably limits you just a little bit with Avios.

Yeah, I know you get $500 because of the calendar but I was thinking you need to use the $250 in 2015, right? I guess if you buy a gift card like you said it doesn't matter.

Do you know about booking American through the Prestige portal so you get the better value and if it's an easy booking process with lots of availability?

Got my TSA Pre done and the charge removed by Amex... Next is spending the $200 on airline charges before Jan and then turning around and doing it again in the spring.

Just in airline credits, the fee for the card will be a wash... So 100k pts plus other perks for free

Avios are cheaper to use than AA miles for domestic trips. I can go round trip in coach from Dulles to Miami for 15000 Avios. The same flight costs a minimum of 25000 AA miles. It's a much better value.

Yeah, but he's flying from Hawaii so he'll have at least 2 segments that would likely total over 25k Avios one way when the saver level AA award is only 17.5k.

For us NOLA folks, coming from MSY we only have a limited number of airports that they offer nonstop service on AA and even those are fairly limited, so finding award space that fits a timely schedule can be tough. MSY feeds as much as they can through CLT or DFW which usually makes it comparable or more costly than using AA miles.

My bad. Didn't see the post about the travel being from Hawaii. Still, Avios are a great general purpose thing to have in the bank.

I haven't done it yet but you aren't transferring the points, just buying the seat with the points so availability should match paid seat availability. Which by the way, is going to earn you AA miles so you are getting some points thrown back at you.

The thing to look out for is making sure the sollar cost Citi is showing for the flight matches the market price so you don't use too many points to cover it, but that's the issue with any portal.

Agreed. Definitely a good tool to have in the shed.

Just applied for the AMEX gold with a 50k sign up bonus with 1k spend. They are reviewing my application. This is my first amex card. Think it has something to do with having about 5 credit card accounts open or it just being my first amex?

my wife has the 100k platinum offer but I'm just not sure how much use we can get out of it with the 450 fee so i wanted to try out the gold first.

I am racking my brain on this discover it card with apple pay. If i can buy 10k of VGC from walgreens that would be 2k cash back. I need to set up a serve account to do this though.

The fee is $50 after airline credits (google this). The offer is considered to be the best out there. You are crazy not to take it.

I feel like I've gotten every other offer besides the Platinum 100k. And it's the only one I want. I've spent $200 this month at the Centurion Lounge.

I've put $13,000 on my Starwood and my wife put $11,000 on hers. No bites for that Plat yet either.

I'm canceling her Starwood, and she's using mine as an AU now so maybe that will do something.

I have no clue how they determine who they target for that and apparently nobody else does either.

I put almost 35-40k on the SPG the first year. Daycare, wife's tuition, baby birth, hospital bills, initial $5k MS and every damn thing that wasn't a bonus. Nada. I've also probably done about 15k on Amex Biz Gold. I've only received the 50k plat flyer. Lame.

Sounds like it.

Maybe now that SPG Amex doesn't have foreign fees, perhaps when I use it out of country they will deem me worthy as someone who may actually want that Plat.

Maybe so. Whatever boxes they need checked, I'm apparently not checking them.

What I find interesting about the Amex offers I've received is the dichotomy: Blue Cash and Platinum 100k/1k spend. Nothing in between. Never had an Amex in my life.

ETA: I've read that Amex is no longer reimbursing gift cards. C'est vrai?

Ok, I just opened an invitation for a Korean Air Skypass Visa Signature written entirely in what I can only assume is fricking Korean

Based on where they placed the numbers, it looks like a 40k signup bonus, $80 annual fee waived the first year. Then there is a 2 next to VIP and a $0 off on its own that I have no idea
