I just applied for and received one (if I can get one, anyone can...jeez).

Just booked a Vegas trip for a pretty good price (flight & hotel) through Amex Travel, and got a pretty decent price, plus "centurion club" during layovers. Trip is totally refundable. 5x points too. Seems pretty legit to me, but I'm a poor, so I wouldn't know.

I'll admit, I was pretty fricking impressed by the presentation when I got the card. A wood holder, and the card is way heavy, made of metal or some shite. I'm sure if I tried to charge something like a bit of furniture, I'd be denied, but damn. That card has some heft to it.

I can also easily cancel the card.

Did you get the first year free? If so, I'd use it for a year them switch when they try to charge you the 450 yearly fee. My first year with gold rewards was awesome. I'll be switching though soon. I got the 50k rewards bonus after 3 months and that was as much as I got the entire next year.

Depends, do you travel much? I use it for the perks of having the lounge access and the room upgrades. There are better cards out there technically, (Blue Cash Preferred) but the Platinum has awesome perks. $100 Yearly Saks credit, $200 Airline credit, Centurion Airport lounge access, Hilton Gold status, $200 yearly Uber credit, the list goes on and on. Just up to you if you believe that the perks cover the $550 AF.

Member since '58 here. These people swing a very big stick when it comes to merchant disputes (on the consumer side). When you travel abroad, it's almost like having an American Embassy in your back pocket. When my daughter got married, she left her wedding dress behind at the hotel. I called Amex and they were on it. By that afternoon, they had located the dress. These are real people at the other end of the phone. They really do listen.

I have gold. Big fan. My company is very small but with a rather large flow of revenue, and we don't have company cards. Work expenditures on this card are 3-4X's what my personal expenditures are a month and I eat up all the points.

I've considered the platinum but $550 a year always keeps me away.

I think the Chase Sapphire Reserve is better, and a lot of the benefits overlap. Platinum is certainly reasonable, though, I have both and have done the math and make my AF back with Amex Offers contributing a good bit. shite Amazon just took 20% off of any purchase if you spend a single Membership Reward Point so I made $200 in free gift cards for doing nothing.

Agreed. For most, sapphire reserve will be better, but Amex platinum is still good if you travel a lot.

Amex offers is awesome and can help mitigate some of the annual fee, but the offers are also available on cards with a lower fee.

The fine hotel and resorts program is a good way to squeeze a little extra value.

if you can run $25k of expenses thru amex(over 3 months) go for the business version of amex platinum.

the annual fee of the business version is $100 less....and the welcome bonus is 100,000 points.

the Amex Centurion Lounges access alone are worth the annual fee to me.

having the big 3 of a SPG, chase sapphire reserve, and the amex plat makes a sky dweller lifestyle quite efficient.

rewards with pretty much every hotel group and airline alliance in the civilized world are available.

Just get the 2% cash back fidelity investment card. No fees. What these other cards are giving people rarely come to 2% and they define the benefits--trips, lounge access ect. Just give me the cash.

It is. So is my Venture, which for me is a far better card. If you travel so frequently that the perks of the Amex are worth it, then there you go. But damn that fee.

Do they let you convert your points into other things as well or is it strictly travel redeemable only? I like that I can redeem my Venture points for a number of things, but I can convert them at the same travel rate to a gift card for things like Amazon, which means I don't pay a dime come Christmas.

It's a fine card if you travel enough to make the perks worth it.

Just keep in mind that there aren't a ton of Centurion clubs and if you are flying a carrier other than DL you won't have access to any of the skyclubs.

The card is best when you have a centurioun club at your primary airport or are a traveler that flys DL solo.
