The wife works seven hundred miles away and since I’m the one with the spending problem I told her to put me on a budget weekly and just load a prepaid visa or something to limit any overages. My question is this..is there a prepaid type card that is reloadable without tons of fees? I’m closing my acess to any funds and giving her full reins of the finances since I obviously suck at it..thanks

I would set up a separate no fee checking account for you and use a debit card. She can put your allowance into that account.

Agree that you need a separate account w/debit card. The two of you can decide together how much discretionary income you should put into that account, to cover any necessary bills you need to pay and your budgeted spending money.

I urge you to sit down (or FaceTime) at paydays and go over your respective spending each pay period. Be open and honest with each other—if you (or she) went a bit mad and spent too much, let the other know ASAP. Don’t hide it, and commit to making an honest effort to stick to a budget.

‘Bout to go all deep here: you also need to think long and hard about why you’re overspending. You say a pay reduction hit you—but why didn’t you cut back? What, specifically, drives your overspending? Shopping online while drinking? Expensive hobbies like golf? Compulsive shopping/hoarding of stuff? Whether it’s drinking too much w/the friends, excessive dining out, spendy clothes, crazy car stuff, or just a fixation on stuff in general, you can’t begin to live within your means until you analyze your spending.

Money problems are a more common reason for divorce than infidelity.

Prepaid cards are for people that can't get checking accounts.

Get a seperate checking account and have $XX a paycheck deposited into it, rest into your wife's account. Plenty of banks will give you a free account with a direct deposit.

When you say expenses, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean you SPENT that much, or you were obligated to spend the money to keep your business afloat, or you had crazy medical bills? Or is it debt service?

In any event, cut up your cards, start eating beans & rice, and stop spending money you ain’t got. Quit the gym and run for free in the park, cut the Netflix and watch antenna TV, find a cheaper cell plan, sell crap you don’t need.....

I hope you are making a minimum of $150k and that alone would leave you with zero savings unless you are counting savings as an expense.

Holla - You're saying you want your wife to control your excess spending habits?

This will not work out well for you my friend.

This generation of men is pitiful.

You should be embarrassed to even post this.

It’s unusual, but continuing to ruin his and his family’s own financial livelihood, but in a more “manly” way, is a lot more embarrassing. But insulting the manliness, instead of providing a manly but still useful alternative and/or at least acknowledging the intent, says a lot.

Why is OP getting so many downvotes?
The guy has identified a problem and is asking for the best approach to solve it.

GL OP.

While identifying the problem is the first step, not cutting back his spending habits and continuing to live like he was still making more money is why he is being downvoted.

As someone has said, cut cable, eat ramen, lower phone bill, cut credit cards, etc until all debt is gone then budget yourself to a certain amount each month and put some aside for retirement, savings, rainy day fund, etc. If that means having your wife hold all the money, by all means go ahead.

The problem with this is he will likely have overdraft fees due to his spending problem.

Chase offers a prepaid card that only has a $5 monthly fee that he can't overdraft. He needs something like that

So in other words it was disingenuous and a backhanded brag?
