Zack Hess will move to the bullpen says Paul Mainieri. “Zack has come to the realization that his future is as a bullpen guy. We think Zack can be more of a benefit to the team out of the pen.”

Guess that puts Hilliard starting Friday if Henry can't go?

I'm a CPM fan, but talk about a slow learner in this particular situation.

So, was it’s Zach’s decision to be a starter? Seems an odd way to phrase it

Based on what? Sure he’s had a couple of tough outings but he also has had many good outings.

I feel like he’s ready for this.

Wasn't Hess a good starter last season towards the end? If so what happened?

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't he the closer 2 years ago? If so what happened to him this year? I mean, didn't manieri have all of last year as evaluation on Hess starting ability

“I can tell you on Friday night, it will be Zack Hess,” Mainieri says. “Let’s go ahead and just say this right now, right out front, okay? Zack Hess is going to be our Friday night starter for the entire season. There’s no consideration to moving him to the bullpen...."

I think Hess also wanted to be a starter. He was one his freshman year until the second half of the season when he came in for long relief and then became the closer in the postseason with Newman struggling to get the job done (Newman was the closer most of the season). Hess likely wanted to be able to assume that Friday night role because it would come with more draft money if he was successful. We had no other options last year and didn't have noticeably better options at the start of this year either. Sounds like Zack (and Paul) may be seeing his draft stock slip and need to show everyone he can still be a dominant relief arm, not to mention given his performance this year, he just hasn't been a consistent enough starter to keep him in the weekend rotation.

Zack Hess: “I wanted to give my chance to see if I could be a starter ... I’ve worked as hard as I can to develop as one, but it’s not what I’m best at ... I’m at the best version of myself coming in at the end of games.”
