My two cents worth: Coming at this from a little different angle: I get no thrill out of watching my favorite team beat up on a weak team. This may sound sacreligious but I would rather watch them lose a close, exciting game to a highly ranked team than go out and pound some weak sister. I would suggest that some on here have a similar outlook; hence, those that reference LSU's close loss to a very talented and highly ranked USC Trojan team in 1979 (coming off of a NC) as being one of the most memorable and exciting games in LSU history. I guarantee you that games against N. Texas, Utah St., The Citadel, etc. - no matter how bad an arse whipping you all lay on them - are never going to be on a "Greatest Games in LSU History" list. Likewise, USC's 1988 LOSS to ND when both were 10-0 and ranked #1 and #2 in the country is still one of the most anticipated, electric games I've ever attended. For me as a football fan, the journey is at least as important as the end result. And the "journey" each year is the twelve Saturday's football games. And as a fan, I want to see the most competitive matchups possible. For what its worth.

Oh well, it happens. They took on their share of top rated teams last year including a top rated OOC team which helped put them into the championship, since they were one of the teams up for debate. So they have a weak OOC schedule this year. This is their first year not playing a BCS conference for a regular season game in like 7 years. I think LSU needs to dump the Tulane series.

What gave in 2004 when Auburn's OOC was ULM, the Citadel, and LA Tech?...maybe a win over VT or somebody could have gotten you into the NC...but we'll never know

Ok. Does the rest of the SEC play by different rules? Do the other conferences count OOC losses against a team when deciding their league championship?

I agree

Stupid not to at least play one quality team ooc per year... esp when we saw Auburn's failure to do so in 04 used as an excuse to keep them out of the title game (only an excuse IMO the BCS formula pretty much ruled them out)

but even more significantly IMO without playing and beating va tech last year LSU doesn't get into the title game and win the national championship last year... so it's time for everyone at LSU (including those that make the schedules) to take notice and schedule better

First, I wouldn't say two years is "over and over", three, yes. Second, 2006 we played at Texas. Third, if LSU played, say, App St, in place of Va Tech last year, they would NOT BE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. It would've been OSU vs. VT. And one of the main reasons Auburn was left out in 2004 was because their OOC schedule sucked. So, yeah, it is kind of important to schedule at least one good OOC team, so if, at the end, you have to "compare resumes", your team can get the nod.

If you take care of ARK at home or poor little Kentucky, then the VA tech game doesn't matter.

I believe that year and the AU year were anomalies.

Last year everyone having 2 losses (a first mind you.

2004 - Three suposedly great teams went undefeated. OU was pushed all year long as being one of the top two; so when it came to the end, there was no way AU was going to jump OU.

OU's OOC that year was Bowling Green / Houston / and Oregon (Oregon finished 5-6 without a bowl birth)... not exactly juggernauts. Plus the SEC aura wasn't what it is today, which came about (at least in part) to OU and OSU getting dismantled in the NC games.

So again, who cares if we play Cupcakes... we will play enough top ten teams throughout the season. I really only care to win the SEC every year anyway, and anything else is lagniappe.

LSU playes Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Bama, and probably Florida or Georgia for a second time--OOC schedule is a red herring!

How about trading your OOC game with West Virginia for our Florida game? That would improve our OOC schedule and soften your's

sorry...i was rude back at you.

not to get way off topic, but i hate how there is a group of USL fans that seems to have a 'grudge' against LSU - and as a result they give the majority of that school's fans who root for both teams a bad name. other than disliking the anti-lsu faction at a school like usl, south, etc, i don't see why tiger fans should have any reason to 'bash' a smaller school.

-- There is no debating that we lack a 'marquee' OOC opponent from a BCS conference on our schedule.

It would also be wrong to say that we are playing four 'strong' teams from non-BCS leagues - but with the exception of the one big opponent we are in line with what the rest of the SEC west plays.

Auburn's other three OOC opponents are Southern Miss, UL Monroe and UTMartin.

Alabama's are Tulane, WKU and Arkansas State.

I'd say that North Texas is on the same level as ULM, UT Martin, WKU and ASU.

Tulane is Tulane.

Appy State is probably a little better than the UNT, ULM group.

Troy is similar to USM.

Even considering the fact that we don't play a good OOC schedule, CFN still says that we play the toughest schedule in the SEC West:

CFN SEC Schedule Ranks

-- This sounds like SEC "Homerism" but the fact is that the SEC has the best talent top to bottom of any league in the country. It also has the best collection of coaches in the country.

-- It doesn't show up with a team name on the schedule, but at the end of the season we get to play a top ten opponent in the SEC Championship game. This is in addition to facing top ten teams UGa and UF, what should be a top 15 club in Auburn. Alabama, Mississippi State, and South Carolina are all probably top 40 teams...and Arkansas and Ole Miss probably won't be far off.

-- From the standpont of being 'entertained' or seeing a great game, I don't think that any Tiger fan would say he'd rather see LSU play North Texas over Va Tech, Ohio State, Texas, etc.

But when it gets down to it, my overwhelming desire as a LSU fan - one I think that all LSU fans should share - is for us to win the SEC and National Championships.

I might feel and say a 2-pt loss against a team like USC was a great college football game from an entertainment standpoint, but it would be contrary to the overall goal of the team.

This doesn't mean that I think LSU should follow the Bill Snyder model...just saying that I accept we are going to play mostly lower-level teams OOC with hopefully one 'big game' a year.

Last year it worked out that big game helped us. This year, not having the big game might actually be more beneficial.

That is true. A 3 loss LSU team would have been playing in "Who gives a frick Bowl"

You are absolutely correct.

I would rather play cupcakes, then go undefeated in the SEC every year and would be in the running for the MNC every year than playing tough OOC teams and going to the toilet bowls every season.

That's very smart schedule by Vern.

Look at tOSU last year and tell me who they played OOC and look at what bowl they played in.

USC, Texas, OU, tOSU ...each team only has to play 1 big game every season and if comes out ahead, would be running for the BCS MNC game.

Why LSU can't do like those teams???

99 out of 100 times tOSU doesn't make the NC with that schedule. Had what, 6 teams(?) ahead of us not lost in a two week span(most of which Should NOT have lost), Ohio State heads to the Rose.

In the last 5 years-ASU, Zona (twice), Va. Tech (twice), Oregon State, makes this years dismal schedule almost palatable.

The LSU OOC schedule has never been so bad it cost us the chance to play in the BCS title game. Can Auburn say the same? The answer is...NO. Recall La. Tech, ULM, and the Citadel
