I know all you Wade lovers want to engage in the revisionist history that there was no dark cloud hanging over LSU at the time McMahon and Golden were hired. It is easy to forget just how much the college landscape has changed in the last few years and how much control the NCAA has lost. The fact that no serious penalties came from this situation doesn’t mean none were expected at the time

There were a lot of fans that wanted LSU to call the NCAAs bluff similar to how Kansas was.

The writing was on the wall at the time.

That was three years ago. Basketball programs can be turned around in one season. It happens all the time. The coach's main job is to get the talent. Talent takes care of most of it in CBB

What coach would want to come to a program where the admin stupidly fires the coach when the precedent had long been set that non-cooperation is best for both school and NCAA?

brother, Wade would not cooperate with LSU. LSU reinstated him once he did. That was after he had lied to them after the 1st tape came out.

They gave him a ton of rope despite his insubordination. Chances are LSU would have rode it out with Wade if Wade had shown any alignment in the situation from the start.

Exactly zero of the administration that fired him was there at the start so this dog don’t hunt. Scott was scared of thanksgiving dinner with his in law mark Emmert

Then we should have stuck with wade through a show cause.

Would have been better than giving the program the death penalty like Scott did.

Same with FB and the shape CEO left it in. Both programs were looking at sanctions

Yeah, because LSU men’s basketball is completely comparable to football in terms of history, facilities, overall success, and support.

Thoughts on either Wade or McMahon aside, this is a mostly true statement. It isn’t just raw talent, though. It is necessary to construct a talented, but complementary roster, which McMahon has been really poor at so far. Spending more money may not fix that, but we’ll see.

pointless.

and the crossover was close enough. None of it changes how poorly Wade handled the situation.

Why would Todd Golden have taken the LSU job over the Florida job?

Wade got Alleva fired.

Woody was scared of the same.

Ironically his choice to replace wade will be a big part of himself being fired.

Something is off with him. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Kind of a weird vibe.

It really had not long been set. Everything was in a state of flux. The other programs that defied the NCAA did so mostly at the same time LSU was under investigation. None had their football programs under the microscope as well. In hindsight, Woodward could have rolled the dice and probably won, but that absolutely wasn’t a given at the time. Most LSU fans would not have wanted LSU to put the football program at risk for the sake of a basketball coach who did not live by the stipulations of his continued employment after his suspension.

quote:

He could have hired whatever nobody was willing to take the job for a reasonable contract and we'd be better off than we are now.

Again, in hindsight, that would have worked out better. Woodward did not know at the time this would all blow over relatively quickly and he didn’t hire McMahon expecting him to fail. He could have gone really cheap and hired someone he knew wouldn’t last, but he chose to go with who he felt was the best coach willing to come to LSU under the circumstances, but that took promising above market security.
