Marcus Thornton was the closest we’ve had to Chris Jackson as a shooter

Are we talking after CJ or all-time? All time its Maravich. He could do so many things that his pure shooting skill was vastly underrated. I would also put Howard Carter, Don Redden, and even Jordy Hultberg above Marcus Thornton as pure shooters.

It’s tough to compare anyone to CJ. He was like nothing anyone had ever seen. Literally let his Tourette’s play in to his game. It was astonishing.

Nothing against any of our other athletes, there’s just no comparison to CJ.

If CJ had played against the competition Maravich played, there is no telling how many points CJ would have scored.
Maravich was the man in his day. He changed the game.

So him dropping 66 on Walt Frazier, an all time great defender and Earl Monroe in the NBA… Monroe begged to get off of him. Frazier talked shite to him and he never let him forget it… This is why he is still listed as an all time great. He would have absolutely destroyed the game today. There were great great players in the 1970’s including people like Doc, Oscar, etc etc.
Y’all act like he only played against white boys or something.

You can’t compare players across eras like this. If Duncan Robinson could hop in a time machine he would drop 40 a game in college back in the 60’s. Pistol would probably still be a good player today if he were born in the modern era, but it’s kind of apples to oranges.

CJ was the closest thing to The Pistol we’ve ever seen, so no.

I was a grad assistant and taught CJ. I kind of knew him. I watched him play often. As a grown up i saw Stef Curry play in person. C.J. was without exception (except for the Pistol) the greatest scorer that ever played college basketball.

In basketball you ABSOLUTELY can compare them. Pete was 6’5-6” tall and was absolutely deadly in EVERYTHING on the court. You think Dr J wouldn’t be a HoF player today? You think Connie Hawkins wouldn’t face plant most if this NBA?
You know that underhand pass y’all were astonished Lebron made in the playoffs was HIS? You act like Pete couldn’t dunk. That is a freaking joke. He chose not to, but I’ve personally watched him dunk on people.
And for your comment on today’s lousy defense game. Please go look at the abuse Pete took inside in the NBA when he drove the lane.
Just a bunch of naive kids who actually NEVER WITNESSED IT LIVE. Unfortunately for you I did and I’m not talking just Maravich. Find the film on CP3 when he came to the league where he learned to handle the basketball. Yep. Pete Maravich videos in his basement.
Basketball isn’t like football where the bodies matter.

Pete would own this sorry arse no defense league. Own it by dropping about 40 a night from beyond the 3.

Here dumbass:

Dr.J shares what made Pistol Pete the most skilled basketball player he ever saw while training together with him over the summer, playing in numerous one-on-ones against each other.

Dr.J had a lot of respect for Pistol Pete
Julius Erving, a.k.a Dr.J, is the first premiere highflyer in the NBA, one of the greatest scorers, and a class act that doesn’t come very often. His legacy and impact on the generations of young players are unmatched, and even Michael Jordan said he was his idol growing up. Younger NBA fans probably don’t know how impactful he was, but if you look at his resume, you will soon understand why he is so respected around the league.

In his autobiography, Erving talked about the respect for another basketball legend, Pistol Pete Maravich, who is still the most prolific scorer in NCAA history. Erving recalls playing one-on-one against Maravich when they were both teammates for a short period of time with the Atlanta Hawks back in 1972. When they started with training camp at Savannah, Georgia, Erving was able to see firsthand what made Pistol Pete so unique and gave an interesting breakdown of his skillset and what made him stand out against any other player he played against up until then.

“Playing one-on-one with Pete is an experience. He’s got the kind of shooting range that I’ve never seen before. He can shoot it consistently out of thirty-five feet, but if I’m going to go out there and defend that, then he’ll cross me up on the dribble and get a layup or a dunk. Pete has some great ups, and while he’s not known for getting to the rim, he throws some nice dunks down in our games, his hair flapping in the hot Georgia air. One of the things that makes Pete so great is his hang time, and no one talks about that. He can leave the floor and sort of stay up there long enough to fake one way and then pass another.” - Julius Irving

Our guards all together won’t average what CJ averaged

I like our guards we have, CJ was in a different world

I think in general you can not compare across generational lines. Pete is one of the few exceptions. I think he would still score a gazzillion points a game in todays leagues. However, if CJ got put in a time machine and transported his game back to 1970 I think his 30 ppg average becomes 40 ppg.

If you held a gun to my head I would say Pete is the better college ball player, but it’s not by a lot.

Will be uniquely different in helping the Tigers win games.

At this point, there is no real comparison.

In the future, someone else may be similar to Pinson.

No offense but go on Youtube and watch more footage. Pinson isn't even in the same zip code as CJ

Nope, Pete would dominate. Why Pete had great skills and he gets credit for his skills 40 plus points a game don't lie. What so many people never consider was the work ethic that developed them skills. No one will ever out work him in developing them skills. That is truly what made him great.

Overall, it is no comparison. Pete was a WAY better ball handler from a passing and illusiveness perspective.

You do realize Pete would have averaged nearly 60 a game with a three point line? That is considering THERE WASN’T a shot clock then. CJ played with a 45 second shot clock AND Pete would have likely taken way more 3’s. When you’re shooting from 35 and shoot it at a 42%, that’s insane knowing everyone is trying to stop that. CJ did have some really great players he also played with so I’ll give him that but the speed of the game with the shot clock impacts scoring positively. Just look at the old 4 corner spread Brown used to employ.

I found this tidbit from an opposing fan…
I watched him play in the All College Tournament at Oklahoma City University his junior year (if I recall correctly) at LSU. The brackets were "fixed" so that there was a 98% chance of LSU and OCU meeting for the championship. OCU had an all america guard named Rich Travis. For weeks the papers had nothing but "Maravich/Travis, the big faceoff". When the big game came around, the LSU center got the tip and it went (of course) to Maravich. 4 guys came to guard him. He dribbled the ball twice, palmed it, and passed behind his back and over his head half the length of the court to his teammate who was standing alone under the basket. The game (and the "big faceoff") was effectively over at that point. Pete scored around 60 points, and LSU won by around 25.

CJ averaged 30 a night as a true freshman brotha. Still holds the NCAA record for PPG among freshmen.

I think you should go back and re watch or find more of that "footage" you speak of.
