It's not that. It's that we desperately need facility upgrades in baseball and basketball but all our money is tied up in current coaching staff salaries and buyouts for previous coaches. I'm glad we have the coaches that we do, but there is a negative to it as well

So I was dreaming when they announced they were spending an assload of money renovating the Pmac? You make a statement like this, but it's absolutely false.

Yes, it’s how you set the table for future coaches. The goal is to prove how easy it is to win over here, regardless of what sport and then you will become one of the highest paid coaches in the nation. Kim did it in 2, Jay did it in 2, O did it in 3 (his full seasons), CPM did it in 3, Saban in 4, Les in 3. You win, then you get paid. If they begin to fail, you fire them and then can attract any coach, regardless of where they are at, look at how we took Notre Dame’s winningest coach, something completely unheard of.

Now some of that could be it was better to pay him out full and stop him from going elsewhere

No it was probably more about not wanting to air out everything O was doing to get him to back down. It would have been really, really bad for the LSU brand.

There is no way if there was a battle O would have gone quietly in the night and while I think O loved LSU to a point, he loves money way more.

I'm in favor of huge money, with no additional years. What gets these guys in trouble is the 10 year stuff, or roll over 5 year lifetime crap.

Crazy money, keep the same year stipulation. Thus helps both parties.

Double? No.

Where is Jay's annual salary compared to other college coaches?

I would not be upset if he becomes the highest paid coach in the country, if he's not already.

Also, remember this is all booster money. So if the boosters think he should get more money, he will get more money.

I thought what Woody did for Ed O following the championship was unnecessary and excessive.

How is it excessive when it was probably in his contract, that if he wins a natty, he gets compensated for it, lets day the average salary of the top 4-5 coaches. There is no way around that if that clause was in O's contract.

a lot of people love to throw out money that is not theirs. it happens on this board all the time. doubling his pay is not necessary or a smart play. yes, give the man a nice raise and maybe up the incentive part also. coach J is compensated very well for a college baseball coach esp. when you consider all of his income sources.

It seems to me that the $230K CJJ will get in bonuses now should be enough cash. I would extend his contract though.

I think I saw that CJJ is in the top 3 of college baseball coaches in base pay. LSUAD should keep him at or near the top, IMO.

When O was given his extension the team had improved every year since he started. 2016 was an interim, ended up with 8 wins. 2017 was his first full year, 9 wins. 2018 was a 10 win season and a NY6 bowl win, 2019 was a 15-0 natty. O was making less than $4 million at the time, and after those 3 years of improvement culminating in the greatest season in the sport's history, I'm sorry but that raise was deserved. Woody's not a fortune teller, and giving coaches raises is just as much about showing potential candidates in future coaching searches that winning here comes with monetary rewards. If we stayed cheap with Coach O after 2019 and fought his buyout after being fired, agents are going to tell coaches to be weary of taking a job here.

If Jimbo was still on his original contract Woody gave him it would have been far more manageable to fire him last year. Woody didn't give him an extension after 0 natties, 0 conference, and 0 division titles in his tenure. That's on them At least O won shite when he got his extension.

Coker and Chizik got raises/extensions after their natties too. Natty winning coaches tend to get those and any agent will use it against you if you're an AD that doesn't do it.
