We have 2 returning backs and a true freshman. How often is a true freshman a major contributor? More often they aren’t than they are.

So the odds would say Emery is our 3rd back, who in Kelly’s system gets a lot of run and is in a position to start share caries with one injury.

Now do I need to tell you how to count or do the alphabet or any other elementary lessons?

Jackson is going to be the feature back.

While Jackson's ceiling is high, I don't think he's done enough quite yet to lock down that feature back status. And if last season proved anything, it's that Kelly likes to juggle his starters and share carries. Not to mention, Emery is a superveteran with pass catching ability who has shown up in some big games (Bama).

Lots of guys go back to their original team to retire.

Based on the depth chart, it is very reasonable to see that carries will be very limited for him this season. As such, I brought up the very positive theory of him going into a future in coaching. People crapping on that random theory in my head is the sad part.

He’s proven to be a great option catching the ball out of the backfield. We should expect more of that with less running from the QB and more focus on the RBs this season. He also has experience, which isn’t something to be laughed off.

Also, we had an over abundance of depth to start last season and had 3 active scholarship RBs by the bowl game? Depth at RB is a necessity in the SEC.

I don't think it was a complaint as much as it was an honest question. Like you said if Emory is healthy he can definitely be an asset. If he's not 100% ready then maybe it is the upper classmen mentoring and possibly a GA for next season. All depends on how his knees are and how they are going to be

Why would we use Williams as the third down back when we have a bull like Kaleb Jackson?

Because he’s the better pass protector, which is more important than having a bull on the field for most third downs.

I’m sure the coaches would love Jackson to be the best pass protector and keep him on the field even more, but likely that Williams will be the best option for that role given his experience and strength as a pass protector

We run no huddle so much it won’t be super structured, both guys will get in the game in different scenarios, ie Josh Williams will get goal line carries from time to time and Williams will get 3rd down snaps from time to time

Not going to address why Emery would want to come back but I can address why LSU would want him to come back even though he hasn't played a ton in his first 5 years at LSU. Having 4 scholarship RBs is acceptable but 3 is really, really thin. That situation is what LSU was looking at this fall. Williams, Jackson, and Durham and that was it. I don't think Holly will be available this season unless the gun charge is dropped or negotiated into a settlement of some sort. And LSU seems to have the good policy of "you get charged, you will not play under that state in the justice system."

Or is it that your hypothetical sucks?

You’re just penciling in a freshman in over Emery to become the “change of pace” back. Didn’t we see a similar scenario play out very differently when Emery came in as a freshman and Edwards-Helaire became the feature guy?

Because we’re thin at running back and he’s extremely familiar with the system. If he’s healthy, Emery has speed and explosiveness unmatched by any running back currently on our roster with the exception of Durham. His talent was never the question. His consistency was.

Really does not seem to be a place for Emery unless you start to think about a future in coaching. Way I look at it is that Emery will provide mentoring to the young backs and move into a GA role starting next season.

Nothing.

Also, I don’t think that’s why he came back. So I think your theory is wrong. So I downvoted. Because I disagree, not because you’re a terrible person and I don’t like you. That only started after you complained that your theory wasn’t praised. Get over it.

he hasn't done anything of note in what seems like 12 years at LSU. He is probably coming back because he didn't get any offers he liked.

you are basing everything you said on "hunches"...
What has he done to this point that has shown any leadership or coaching ability?

He has game breaking ability. He can score at any point. Why would you not bring that back?

He would be a senior already familiar with the offense. Look at who else is in the RB room. An unproven and mostly inexperienced back in Jackson. A strong but limited back in Williams and Holly who’s trying to stay out of prison. LSU needs Emery.

He has made some very impressive plays when he gets the chance. His athletic ability and his ability to make defenders miss is as good as anyone else. He can catch well and he has break away speed. There’s a role for him, and it’s not like the RB is bursting with talent at the moment.

He is rehabbing a serious injury. Nobody is going to take him in the portal. He will not be drafted without some PT and LSU is the easiest bestest place to make that happen. No brainer…
