Ya if they don’t have DBs starting to emerge next year, then let’s panic.

Why can’t we panic about the defensive line depth? It’s obvious to anyone that the roster mismanagement has led to the deficiencies on defense. You’ll have the same exact post about the D line this time next year.

If we keep this same mindset of “just wait 2-3 more cycles” to fill in holes at DB and DL, we’ll be waiting until 2027 for an actual run. Defense will continue to be bad until actual difference makers are recruited

It was pretty disheartening knowing Mizzou gashed us on 1v1 in the first half. They do have legit QB & recievers in Wease & Burden.

Just still sucks knowing LSU doesn’t have the DBs to match up against them head on.

We apparently have a DB with an entirely fused spinal column because on two consecutive passes to the exact same spot he neglected to turn his head to defend the throw.

Of course it is a subjective opinion that can't necessarily be proven. But even as the consummate contrarian and smartest guy in the room you wouldn't agree that man for man, OVERALL, LSU is at least as talented at the personnel on those teams? I'm sure those teams have guys at certain positions that are better than what LSU has at those position. But in totality is is difficult for me to accept that LSU is far less athletic/skill than the players on those teams. Yet, those teams are performing much better at just basic aspects.

NO ONE is saying this LSU defense should be great. Most recognize there are some spots where LSU defensively is not on par with some of the better teams. But outside of coaching there is no reason this group should be one of the worst in the nation. Which is what they are.

On paper our defense this year should be so much better than 2021. That list of players somehow held Bama to 20 points and 6 rushing yards. Our defense this year couldn’t dream about those kind of stats unless we played Mississippi St every game.

2023 defense could still end up being better than 2021.

Prior to 2021 Bama, defense gave up 38 to UCLA, 42 to Kentucky, 42 to Florida, and 31 to Ole Miss.

I agree Toles was not a loss at all. He was overrated coming out of HS.

Part of the reason I would not even attempt to measure that is because I dont know the personnel on the other teams.

Outside of talent, I do believe in continuity, especially on defense. I think LSU lacks talent and they lack experience playing together and under the current coach.

I just posted the snap counts for this year. 14 of the top 25 are new. Most are not "LSU guys". So when you just lean on the talent argument, you are not talking your annual LSU team where they had talented, homegrown players at every age level.

It's Morgan State, but he has an 83.0 coverage grade by PFF along with 3 INTs.

LSU's best coverage DB is/was Greg Brooks with a 66.0 coverage grade. LSU's DB unit has 4 INT's as team.

The rest of the crew:

Welch 64.7
Ryan 62.0
Sam 60.6
Denver 60.0
Yaites 59.3
Alexander 57.6
Chestnut 57.5
Stamps 56.3
Toviano 53.3
Burns 48.3

Idk. Give me his body and see what happens. He'd prob be playing a lot.

Yap, They don’t.

And they didn’t really have them when they came in.

And it will take another year or two to really get where they want to be.

Easiest thing to do is just say coach better but that’s a low hanging fruit

I think the frustrating aspect of the personnel is that we keep playing the guys that we know what they are and we know they don't offer a future within the program. But we're slow to play the guys that we don't know as much about and could be here for a while.

And I know we don't see what happens in practice and some of those guys may clearly not be ready, but there is a chance the light comes on in the game reps and their development takes off.

ETA: It perpetuates the issue so that it persists even when the overall talent is better. Sometimes it seems like it's done to continue to build in the "young" excuse for the people that aren't paying as much attention.

Fantastic job pulling this information together. Another reason why coaching staff makeup has to be a mix of recruiters and technique masters.

Huh? there are several players that you have highlighted that would be out of eligibility. Cam Lewis' first year in college was in 2016.

I’m hoping it takes off at the end of the season here and into the bowl game

Yaites & Womack both played season high snap counts vs Missouri

But Stamps and Toviano didn’t play at all.
