think what made Emmitt Smith so great that he hit the correct hole more often than ever has or will do. When you watched him play, there was nothing he did that overwhelmed you, yet he kept on having great run after great run.
Also always seemed to avoid those "big hits"

They lost 2 in a row in November after he came back. One being the Leon Lett Thanksgiving retardaslide.

I was there! And Leon Lett went back to Godfrey Miles apartment after the game and Miles lived at the next building over.
Fyi...it was frozen rain NOT snow

You’re nuts. Wendell Davis was a 1st team all-American his senior year in ‘87 and was the MVP of the Gator Bowl. Harvey Williams ran for almost 1,000 yards his senior year on a TERRIBLE LSU team in 1990. That dude took a beating.

I agree. Nothing really wowed you other than he always seemed to gain positive yards and always fell forward. At the end of the game you knew Smith had a decent game and damned if he wouldn’t have 150 yards rushing. No one rushes for 18,355 yards in the NFL just because they had a great OL. That’s a bunch of yards. Stayed healthy, hit the right holes, had the vision to just keep getting positive yards season after season. I liked Harvey Williams but he wasn’t in the same universe as the man that rushed for 18,000 yards.

I’m not kidding when I say this is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say that. That Dallas line was otherworldly. Emmitt smith was not Barry Sanders. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship though, and I’m sure there’s an argument to be made for both sides. I know Dallas didn’t win but a few games the year before emmitt was drafted and he produced immediately.

Try playing an NFC championship game with a broken collarbone!! Pussies!

remember Sanders just walked away, Smith played till it was obvious he shouldn't.
Smith 226 games 18,355 yds 81.21/game
Sanders 153 games 15,269 yds 99.79/game
difference of 73 games 73 x 99.79 = 7,284 yds
that would be 22,553 yds
or 31 more games to tie
Smith had 13,963 yds after 10 years in nfl

You must be thinking of someone else. Wendell never checked out. He only dominated his last game as a Tiger in a meaningless Gator bowl.

He had a one of the best assembled O-Lines for a very long, extended period of his career, just about start to finish. Which is KEY to avoid injuries, which in return extends careers and fresher legs/quality performances.
PLUS, with a Stud QB & HOF skilled guys, no defenses could just key in on one guy on that team to stop. It was pick your poison scenario. And they had great coaching and OC’s at the same time for most of his career, which kept them 2-3 dimensional, Run-Pass-Play Action. All of that opens up running lanes combined into one of the most solid overall offenses of its era.
Emmitt Smith was very good, solid, consistent etc.::. But there are many RB’s that would have put up way more #’s than what he did with the same situation.
Tons of very talented RB’s get with a bad team, bad OL, no QBc No WR’s, poor coaching OC’s that are predictable, which allows the defense to key on a stud RB every play.
It’s almost like Belichicks Patriots teams, you just plug and play certain positions for his teams & they all put up #’s because of the chemistry, nucleus and play all phases of the game.
But to be clear, I think he is one of the most durable, solid RB’s of all time, but he tours his records too much. Tons of RB’s could have done the same thing & the greatest of all time, Barry Sanders would have shattered the record books, this isn’t even up for debate

Everybody talks about the Oline when discussing Emmitt…but Moose Johnston might have been even more important to his success. He was brutal at FB.

Smith was really good behind an average college OL

I remember being a drunk student in the student section at LSU and watching Smith run all over us. It was rare I really noticed an opposing player but he certainly stood out. Hell of a running back.

Harvey “Giraffe “ Williams couldn’t carry Emmitt Smith’s jock strap.

Same here. He ran for 190 yards with plenty of YAC, even though we won. The first defender to hit him never brought him down. This was after he ran for about 225 vs. Bama a few weeks prior.
Barry Sanders was a bigger talent, but you can't say Emmitt wasn't special in his own right.
Then again, Jim Brown can say whatever he wants. If he's comparing to himself, not many guys are "special".

Wonder how much Harvey got paid to come to LSU over A&M.

Emmitt Smith wasn’t special
He did NOT say that. He said he had strong big legs and had tremendous balance. Basically went from great to special because of the line.
He said he felt Sanders would have been unreal w a line like that.
Not sure how anyone would disagree.
I can say with absolute positivity that Sander would be HOF if in Dallas. Can't say the same for Emmitt if he would have played in Detroit.

I remember those O lines in Dallas. You could roll a fat bitch through those holes they made.
