I literally said in my post, I would put Barry Sanders over Emmitt and yes if you switch out their lines Barry is probably the All time leading rusher. But to say Emmitt wasn’t special for longevity, all time rushing crown, and 3 rings alone is insane.

You really think so? If he could go off tackle and run 8 yards before a defender even had a shot to touch him?

Fair point. Emmitt was definitely tough. I could have worded that differently

You don’t luck into all those yards even if you have a great line. There are plenty of outstanding Olines with non special backs running behind them that do nothing. Emmitt was great, he had great balance, broke tackles, had great vision, could block, could catch and was as durable as it gets at the position. It’s obvious a lot of his detractors didn’t watch him play cause if you did you know how great he was.

Smith is a douche but you can’t deny his accomplishments in the NFL. Williams was the first LSU player that I can recall to “check out” on the team his last year here. Wendell Davis was the next.

Wendell Davis had an incredible season in 1987, his senior year.

That was Harvey’s sophomore year btw so your timeline is inaccurate as is the statement that Wendell checked out

neither would take a hit their last year here, Davis wouldn’t lay out for the ball either

Agree, Barry imo is the greatest to ever play the position. He was like nothing else since or before him, it was like watching an artist but Emmitt was also an alltime great in his own right.

I met him on a golf course in Navarre Beach, where his mother lived and he was a super nice guy.

He was a tough player. I'll give him that.

Tony Dorsett said the same thing about Emmitt's line and how nice it would have been to see Barry Sanders run behind it

Met him once. Kind of a prick to be honest.

Hung out with him many times and he is a hell of a nice guy and a good person...unlike some his other teammates I hung out with.

I lived in Valley Ranch right across the street from the old practice facility for two years (1992 & 1993 Super Bowl Champs).

And I do think the line made Emmitt look better...but Emmitt was a hell of a back. Not the best...Curtis Martin good.

And I did mention Emmitt in my book...

quote:

Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Darren Woodson—as well as lesser-known Cowboy players such as Joey Mickey and Lincoln Coleman— were regulars. On Thursday nights, they would do karaoke. Tony Dorsett was an owner, and we sang together. It was awesome. So for me to get away from home for the first time, that was a hell of experience. I knew about the “White House” back then. The White House was a house close to the practice facility in Valley Ranch where the players would bring their groupies so they were not seen checking into hotels with women who were not their wives. When Jerry Jones approached Michael Irvin about the White House, Michael Irvin said, “I was trying to do the wrong thing the right way.”

It was funny because I never appreciated the song “Dirty Diana” by Michael Jackson until I lived in Valley Ranch. The Cowboy Café would be empty except for a few locals, and Emmitt Smith would come in by himself and sit in the corner out of sight, and within ten minutes the place would be packed with twenty stunning, beautiful women. This was before the internet, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. How those women knew, I have no idea. My best guess is the waitress had their numbers and would call them.

Emmitt Smith was an awesome back. An all time great in terms of achievements. I just do not agree with him being put on the same level as Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, Walter Payton in terms of ability. Smith absolutely was a pro bowl level back………a top 10 to 15 back of all time, but that team around him put his career in the stratosphere.

Harvey is right. Switch Barry Sanders and Emmitt Williams offensive lines and watch Barry Sanders was on another level

Sanders being better than Smith doesn’t mean Smith wasn’t great.

I believe that what a lot are saying here is what makes Smith great. He never looked like he was doing anything amazing, but he just grinded teams down and the next thing you know, he demoralized you. Consistency and longevity are great traits to have.

I also agree that he was not as great as Barry Sanders could be, but he did it for a long time.

Jim Brown said essentially the same thing about Smith.
