RB is a position with an extremely short shelf life and extremely low on the food chain of money at the next level. Plenty of kids are choosing from an early age to focus on WR or LB because it’s a better path. Hard to convince someone to go in the reverse.
Half of the great Alabama or LSU LBers from this decade would’ve played RB 20 years ago.

I'd say the ONLY reason is vision.
WRs, from my experience, vision in traffic isn't that great. Busting through a line or dealing with tacklers at multiple angles just isn't their forte.
The best way I can put it is that it seems to be an inherent trait for RBs to 'use space', which could span the range from running over someone to bouncing away (like a WR) with alot in between.
A WR tries to 'create space' inherently. Which usually means moving away from a tackler, sometimes spectacularly. But it doesn't include that wide range of skills to 'take what space is there'.

Most WRs don't have the physical toughness to play RB. They don't even have to worry about being hit over the middle anymore, let alone a 250 pound LB meeting them in the hole at 4.5 speed.

I think the question should have been, “Why don’t more RBs move to WR? Look at Josh Reed and Devery Henderson. To of LSU’s best WRs. They came to LSU as RBs.
This right here.
The success we've had is RB to WR, defensive line to O-line.
I would like to see basketball players to tight end, but we don't need that right now with stud recruit coming in.

RBs get beat the frick up and have relatively short careers. I don’t know why anyone would want to switch from WR to RB.

People move positions all the time in college though.

I’m expecting to see Jefferson in the backfield a couple of times against OU. Seen it at times throughout the year. He offers some reliable hands coming out of the backfield, and it usually creates a mismatch.

It’s more of a mentality. You need a WR with Jarvis Landry mentality. You can teach guys to get their pads down and the plays. But, the stick foot and get vertical to get a first down is a mindset.

I played Diarse in high school and he certainly should’ve been a RB in college. The guy was tough as hell to tackle and had balance for days. He played QB for Neville

Eric Martin moved from running back to WR. So did Josh Reed...

Not much nfl $ and get hit too much

RBs and WRs have almost exactly the same average career length in the NFL
I’m not going by the average though because there’s always tons of guys going in and out of the league. I can’t find the numbers for WRs but there’s 17RBs 30+, I suspect the number of WRs that age is significantly higher (I came up with 7 just off the top of my head and that’s only ‘big name players’). Part of it is sheer numbers: a NFL team keeps 5-7 receivers and maybe 3 RBs. Coupled with the increased physical demands of the position it’s easier to play into your 30s as a WR than a RB.

It’s a much easier transition going from RB to WR than the other way. A RB is going from where everything happens in a phone booth with very large humans trying to tackle you to where you are open in space one on one with a db.

IDK relative to the OP, but two of LSU’s greatest WRs started out at RB in Reed and Henderson.
ETA: Apparently Eric Martin did too, but I’m not old enough to remember his time as a Tiger. I remember him as a Saint.
