re: Why do so many fans love Rohan Davey?

Davey was more likeable and a better leader, but there was too much expected out of Booty when he came to LSU. The program just had a 4-7 season in which almost every loss came in the final 2 minutes. But Booty's first year was awful, although I blame the coaching staff more than him. We had Rondell Mealey, who I feel bad for, running behind one of the worst offensive lines in history.
But just watch the 2000 Peach Bowl. Booty started, couldnt' get anything going. We were down 14-3. In the 2nd half, we put in Davey, scored on the first drive and ended up winning 28-14. The team responded to Davey and it showed in 2001 with the SEC Championship.

Yep. Winey played the 2nd half with a broken hand.

I stand corrected, as it was just a guess on my part really.
Bottom line is this, if you are spending your time consumed by the fact that a black guy is playing QB and that pisses you off....well you deserve what your ignorant brain is doing to you. You play whomever is going to give you the greatest chance of winning period.
Are we really having this discussion?

I'm just scratching my head figuring out how so many racist bible beaters could ever want a black guy at QB.
I'm not saying the JJ haters/Lee lovers are racists (well, some of them are).
A very common racist activity is "exception making." It's the "you're ok, not like them" dynamic. It's not hard for a racist to like a black man. I mean, people love their dogs, but still see them as dogs.

Agreed, I spoke to him several times at LSU. Top notch. I poster earlier stated the game where He tried to run for the TD instead of Throwing it. Just wondering how many Monday morning QB's if he would have thrown it and it was not completed would have been bitching that he should have run it. He had room.
But Rohan was one of the greatest QB's to ever play at LSU. Along with JR.

Before Rohan became the starting QB I actually believed that Booty was better based on the limited playing time that I had seen of Rohan. I was wrong. It had nothing to do with race, and to be honest with the type of player Rohan was, the leadership he brought to the team, and the fact that he was actually a pretty damn good QB it's one of the few times that I've been happy about being wrong rather than being pissed (and there was a guy I worked with at the time that let me know about every 10 seconds during the Tenn game where Rohan took over that I was wrong).
Not nearly as much of this situation is race related as many want to believe. On both sides it amounts to person A grasping at straws as to why person B disagrees with person A's position, and neither side can understand why. Are there racists out there - sure, but it isn't being racist to say that not getting a first down in a half of football is unacceptable - and to many (fairly or not) this is how a Jefferson run offense if viewed.

Davey played a huge role in the game that i believe helped to turn this program around...that being the OT Tenn. game of 2000.
as a bonus, Davey to Reed was a thing of beauty.

I loved Rohan - he had a remarkable touch on the ball and to me was a miricle he did not have many more int's. To me, which most of my opinion about it is based on crap i read in that time, had a better commection with the team, and was a strong leader. Booty did not seem to be that much of a teamate - just my guess, I really have no idea.
But I also liked him because he was fat. how can you not like a fat QB who throws for 400 yds?

Rohan was performer, and Booty was aggravating !
Of course it was preferable for Rohan to play!

Davey to Reed was an exciting combo. Davey scrambling around, finding Reed down field in a broken pattern, was great and won a lot of hearts. That is different than thinking one is better than the other.
edited for spelling Reed the way I spell Reid ( the name of my street)

The Race card is always a defense for the ignorant who do like to hear the truth

Great point actually. I wished Lee would have gotten more playing time towards the end of the season (I'm also on record as for sure being glad JJ is back on the team), but years ago, when the Booty/Davey debate was raging, I didn't want Booty to get another snap in favor of Davey. Last I checked, Rohan's as black as JJ, and Booty's as white as JLee.

That's not what I'm arguing dawg. There's going to be a decent amount of assholes who think that way.
Well, thanks for stating the obvious.

I don't think the posters on this board involved in the debate have that mindset though, barring possibly a few exceptions.
If you think that just because someone posts on td.com, he is more likely not to be a racist than you are being purposely ignorant.
The reason Rohan was loved so much was because of his production. JJ's and JL's production have been about the same throughout the year. Those picking JL either have no idea what JJ brings to the table that JL doesn't(hint:running game) or are being ignorant.

disagree...many (most) Tiger fans remember players who they believe show the same kind of passion for the team that they have. Thus a term like, "he was a great Tiger". Not the same as "he was a great player". Booty was never held in this light, Rohan was.

I hate when race baiters come and ask these types of questions on the Rant.
Pretty much you are insinuating that the LSU fan base only wants white QBs, so why the abnormality with RD?
The problem is that your question is flawed. You are merging two issues. Racism in LSU fans and LSU fans complaining about QBs.
They are not one in the same and have to be separated out. It's really two separate issues. Now I am speaking in general terms here because there are always exceptions.
Are there idiots who would rather go 0-12 with a white guy than win with a black QB? Yeah, in Louisiana? Probably more than one. But we have to agree that those racist mfers are the outliers so that we can have a real conversation here.
To my perspective, LSU on the whole don't give a rat's rip what color the QB is as long as he makes decent decisions and is relatively productive and doesn't cost us games on a regular basis. It could be a green alien, I don't care just freaking beat Bama and Ole Miss. I know it wasn't always this way. I understand the history of this program, but after the dark ages from 89-94, I think that the luxury, so to speak, of hating black QBs was overcome by everyone's want to win again. Is it the best way to overcome racism? No. But there it is.
Now, are there racist LSU fans? Hell yeah, I have heard the N word in Tiger Stadium enough times to realize it is still there. But to be honest, while they may call somebody like Rohan the N word, they still wanted him in there, because he was a damn good QB. I really don't remember anyone thinking that Rohan wasn't the man when we were going thru that 2001 season. In fact, I remember alot of people saying that if he had been healthy the entire 2000 season he prolly would have had more starts.
so I think that you have racist LSU fans for sure, but just because they are racist, they are hypocrites too because they still want those guys on the field playing.
I think it's very telling that you never have any arguments about why the black right tackle isn't being replaced by the white right tackle.
Are there racist LSU fans? Yeah, but the rant like to make a mountain out of a molehill with stupid threads like this one.

Davey won us over.
Super kind, likable, modest. Yet, tons of completions. The passing game was fantastic with him in. Possibly the slowest delivery I've ever seen but when everything gets caught, it didn't matter.

I was a huge Rohan fan. He would stand in the pocket until the receiver's route was just starting to break and would deliver a beautiful ball while getting absolutely smashed by a blitzing defender. Then Rohan would pull himself up, limping and gimpy, and do it again and again. If this guy had the 2011 team around him, we would have won every game twice.
Rohan, with the Jamaican accent, was a total player. One of the toughest quarterbacks I've ever seen. And you just had to like the guy.
