There's alot of that sentiment on this board for coaches from other schools.
Good answer. Bring up Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops and most here would say they're jerks.
The fans from their school would disagree.
Miles is a nice approachable guy. But some things he's said & done while here give people the idea he's an arse.
His Ar-kansas remark was disresptful. Either that or he's really stupid.
The recruiting bash F-bomb toward Alabama.
His statement about Bryant-Denny being an easy win for Louisiana universities.
Remarks about how USC gets to play in a weak conference.
The fake punt & still throwing late in the GT game the other night didn't give the rest of the country a good perception of him.

He actually reminds me of President Bush in this way (and in how he butchers the language).
I actually made this same point to the sports editor of our state paper (Arkansas Dem. Gaz). I asked him why he was taking shots at Miles and charactizing him as some goofball, who pulls luck out his a-hole. Reminded me of how the media treats Pres. Bush.
Miles says what is on his mind (easier road for USC, Bama beatenby other La. schools), he stays abstract and isn't extremely helpful to the press (injury reports), then he calls plays that the media and opposing fans think are stupid.
If the other teams and their fans don't like your coach, then that is good problem to have.

I don't really care what they think as much as why they think that

the media and supposed football touts have a consistent chorus that Meyer, Stoops, etc are brilliant coaches while Miles is stupid and only wins because he has the best talent. Bill King on Rivals radio is the worst. Miles must have blown him off at the sec meetings or something like that...King is acts like its personal. Yet somehow Miles beat Stoops twice when he was at OSU with clearly inferior talent to OU. How is that possible??? I don't love Miles but it pisses me off to hear this refrain over and over when the facts are different.

1. The way he speaks, he comes across as goofy to them. 2. They can't believe such a goofy guy can win big. 3. His 4th down success is regarded as lucky, since a goofy guy can't possibly call good plays on 4th down that have a good chance at success....Bottom line, it's easy to dismiss him as stupid, rather than giving him credit for his success. He wins, not because he is a good coach, but he's both lucky and wins because of the talent LSU gets with virtually no compettion in Louisiana.

The answer is simple - Les Miles' teams beat the other schools teams.
You don't find a lot of animosity towards Sylvester Croom or Bobby Johnson, do you? Probably because they don't regularly knock in their opponents heads!

But why the Rivals / King animosity??

I like the bush analogy. Much like the surge, he doesn't apologize for his actions or for his successes.

Miles proves that any coach with the right mindset can come into LSU and surround himself with good coaches (the flipside of that was this year on defense) - and win. LSU might just be one of the easiest head coaching jobs in America. We have a wealth of talent here and all you have to do is win and say the right things to get those recruits. Then you hire the right coaches to coach them, and you can win at LSU for a very passionate fanbase. Let's face it, outside of fishing and hunting there isn't a whole lot to do in Louisiana so a lot of people make LSU sporting events a lifestyle and hobby.

If we accept him as this, and he intentionally pisses off the media, and the media responds by bagging on him, then it is what it is. And Miles has to live with his goofy reputation (deserved or not) that the media creates about him because he doesn't manage the media well. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Miles says what is on his mind (easier road for USC, Bama beaten by other La. schools), he stays abstract and isn't extremely helpful to the press (injury reports), then he calls plays that the media and opposing fans think are stupid.
Bottom line- Miles is a good (not great)coach that antagonizes the media, the media and other fan bases hate, and thusly he ends up with a bad reputation. He continues to win most games however and I guess in his mind the ends justify the means.

Greg, I think you have the answer. How can someone like him with all his PR faults still win???DUH! Maybe in time he will come out of his shell and be his witty self. Everyone would love him then. He might as well.......cause none of that matters as long as he wins.

yes he is
did you happen to miss his comments talking shite about USC anc politicking for LSU before 2007?
Posted on 1/4/09 at 9:58 am to SlowFlowPro
It's one thing if Miles politicks his way into the big game and wins it. It's another if people like Bob Stoops does the same thing and will most likely lose it.

i don't think OU fans try to act like stoops isn't an a-hole though

Yeah, one thing you can say about Miles is that he puts up or shuts up. When he talks smack he backs it up. The only time he has mouthed off he has won the game, the only time he has pulled his "trickery" it has worked. When he doesn't think it will work or he thinks he might not win he keeps his mouth shut. Therefore he hasn't looked like a fool yet. That's what makes him different from some of the others who have mouthed off then looked like complete idiots afterwards.
Which is part of why people don't like him and perceive him to be arrogant. So far he hasn't been arrogant, he's been right.
