Don't try to put this on the players. Why didn't we call a timeout with 26 seconds left vs. 9 seconds left?

Isn't that a time run off in the last minute if you don't have timeouts?

In a nutshell, that's it. With a timeout we get the FG and everyone is still bitching but it's a win.

There is no clock run off in college. I'm not blaming the players, I'm saying that is something our coaches could have told them in the TO before that play.

I wondered about that as well. I have to think it would constitute unsportsmanlike conduct, delay of game or something to fake it, but it's a time-honored tactic to one degree or another.

If you remember Hatch in the Auburn game last year, he was originally just walking off the field after he got his bell rung then dropped to the turf after coaches started motioning for him to go down. That was to give Lee time to warm up.

Alternatively, I wonder if somebody could have just taken a swing at an Ole Miss player to draw a dead-ball personal foul.

I don't think anybody is trying to blame the players for not coming up with something to stop the clock; just thinking through the possibilities. A lot to ask that anybody would be thinking that fast and clearly, anyway.

Agreed. I'm just saying, there are ways to stop the clock without a timeout, and apparently our coaches weren't thinking about that situation at all.

We didn't have a plan at all.

The question should be why didn't we just run the ball and everything else becomes moot at that point. I'll never understand passing the ball.

NCAA rulebook only says this:

quote:

To curtail a possible time-gaining advantage by feigning injuries, attention is directed to the strongly worded statement in The Football Code concerning the feigning of any injury.

I've not found The Football Code and aforementioned "strongly worded statement".

The rule book also says it's a delay of game penalty if a player is not wearing required equipment and the team has no timeout to be charged (charging a timeout is the default way of dealing with it). So maybe Jefferson just rips his helmet off and walks up to take the snap?

This is all just fun theorizing, of course. Not knowing a trick to pull to stop the clock in that situation was hardly the big issue here.

Seriously, if JJ doesn't get sacked on that last drive, we're inside Jasper's range.

The four plays of that drive should have been: Run. Run. Run. Kick.

I think the refs would kill the game if we did that. I think there's some wording somewhere in the rules which gives them discretion in obvious cases like that.

I figured they were hurt the whole game. I mean they were always laying flat on their back.

I would go with run pass run kick. the major focus should be to place the ball for a FG but going for the EZ on one play isn't a bad idea.

I see no problem with passing it once in that situation but not 3 times. Yes we were in range but if you can make it easier, do it. We were passing well that drive so try ONE, but not 3.

The only pass that would be acceptable would be a screen. Any incomplete pass stops the clock, essentially giving Ole Miss a free time out. Better to make them burn it and not have it on their final drive than for them to have one timeout remaining.

Besides, with them blitzing the hell out of JJ, they should have called a screen anyway.
