I’m sure you’d have a different opinion if you spent 12 years already going to school on campus. Don’t know why it’s really a shocker that some look elsewhere.

LSU has not always done the best in recruiting in state talent…some coaches have been better than others over the years….Curly was the worst coach ever in any sport at LSU
Marshal Faulk is a classic example of talent that left the state

He was a Bama fan.
He was never going to LSU.
John Mackovic did a good job recruiting him and Texas is a good school.
Catholic did not steer guys to LSU in the mid 90’s.
Simple as that.

Emsinger had him going to A$M then Ensminger got
Fired and he went to UT
He was not a "mack brown" QB but was such a great gameday
QB he could not keep him out of the game. Chris Simms.....was not

Not highly recruited, LSU never offered.

People forget Craig Nall was the number 1 QB in the state. Davey was no. 1 qb in Florida. Also, wasn’t that the same time Josh Booty was coming?
Posted on 9/24/24 at 1:48 pm to GeauxtigersMs36
Booty came back in 99-2000

His parents named him after Major Ogilve from Alabama

He was undersized and did not have an offer. I was repeating Mike Scarborough’s story about his recruiting visit to LSU on another thread. Even though he didn’t have an offer, he was invited to sit with the recruits for the LSU- Alabama game. He was obnoxiously cheering for Alabama and Dinardo had him escorted away. Screw him.

You have to go back to 1996...Applewhite's senior season at CHS. LSU had solid seasons in 95 and 96, but it still wasn't the "destination" school for every Louisiana player at that time. Travis Minor was the big star on that CHS team. He went to Florida St. FSU, along with schools like Michigan, Florida, Miami, Tennessee, Nebraska, etc were seen at the big schools kids wanted to attend. Including kids from Louisiana. LSU wasn't among that group. That 1996 CHS team was one of the best in the country, and maybe the best team in school history. 7 guys from that class signed to play D-1 football. None with LSU.
People under 40 may not fully remember/appreciate this, but from around 1990 - 1994 LSU football was dead. It was irrelevant not only nationally, but with many of the great Louisiana HS players of that era. If you were a star football player from Louisiana you didn't go to LSU. That's why it was such a huge deal when Kevin Faulk signed in 1995 because a player like him didn't really consider LSU. It would take a few more years and Saban coming in for LSU to start to build a fence around Louisiana

somewhat true but a little bit of an overstatement. LSU probably got around half of the top in state prospects in those days. Even Curley had at least one class that was considered “elite” in the very early days of those rankings.
CHS was pipeline out of the state for sure though.

He was my teams coach at the manning passing academy. He was a cool dude. Real personable and extremely smart. Always rooted for him after that. Except at bama

True, the Hallman staff signed a number of instate talent. One of the coaches signed a bunch of the instate talent, along with a bunch from Tx.
The coach that got Faulk to sign with LSU, nicknamed him Hoss. I yelled out Hoss one time, Faulk stopped in his tracks. Eddie Kennison was signed by the same coach, back then you had to go through a preacher in Lake Charles.
Travis Minor was never coming to LSU, knew his Dad, great guy. RIP Les Minor.
Lots of stuff was going on in recruiting back then.
Catch me drinking sometimes, the stories I can tell.

The Fab 5? The 5 RBs signed in the same class. Only one finished as a RB, David Butler, played DB. The first college scout, Joe Terranova, out of Dearborn, Michigan.

some of those kids have the attitude that they're too good for LSU
No they don’t. Same with a lot of instate kids. They’ve lived here their whole life and want to go somewhere else. Or in the case of academic scholarships out of state schools offer way more. LSU offers nothing to instate kids.

Major Apple sauce indeed was a Bama fan from birth.I lived in Austin while he was a QB at Texas.
Never a talented athlete, supposed great offensive mind he has bounced around as a coach till he landed the HC at SOUTH Bama.
I hope our Tigers give him the "homecoming he deserves !
