Correct they didn't opt out for covid but without covid opting out wouldn't be a thing so they do correlate. Should still be considered covid related opt outs. Chase too for that matter.

They don't reload, they retain upperclassmen... We haven't figured out how to do that yet.

None of those programs would "reload" after the loses we had. Oklahoma just reloaded and lost to Kansas State for the second year in a row.

Too many players leaving early for the draft rather than staying and honoring their scholarship. Only a handful of players that left early made it big. I think the mass exodus we had this year really hurt. But these young players we have here will gel and be fine. I think the bigger problem here is the expectations of spoiled fans. Everyone needs to relax and enjoy watching these young players grow.

LSU went thru a coaching change, and part of the reason for that had to do with roster construction.

WR, LB, OL & DL.

Will Clapp & Russell Gage are fine but these aren’t the type of draft picks that makes LSU who they are when they are on top

There were definitely deficiencies but you could nitpick any team. Bottom line is LSU had one of most talented teams in college football the year Miles got fired — which was the biggest reason he got canned because he lost two early games with a Natty contender that was loaded. Very hard pressed to name many more talented overall squads than that one.

When he left the players followed. Tuehema, Willie Allen et al. Not saying they were stars but the attrition happened when Ed took over. Then he started recruiting duds like Tae Provens that were Troy-caliber players.

If you want to take a victory lap for the 2018 class you must first admit that the only reason Ed has scholarships to give out to Burrow when God blesses us all and he became a free agent, was because we fell on our face late trying to land Surtain, Goodrich, Foster etc. So it was unplanned luck at best.

I agree Ja’Marr was his but I don’t give LSU coaches a ton of credit for keeping local kids in state. You SHOULD do that if you’re going to coach at LSU, especially if Saban doesn’t want the kid which he didn’t with Chase.

But if we had even done well enough to tackle after the catch, instead of allowing 15+ yds afterwards, we probably win by a score or 2.
That's a good take considering you didn't watch the whole game. The poor tackling was a big part of our loss.

But the biggest reason we didn't reload this year is because we lost the off season. Probably add to that the weak recruiting class in 18 and we just didn't have the fire power to reload this year. Saban and Dabo have a way of convincing enough experienced talent to stick around that they aren't completely rebuilding with either players or coaches in a given year. No doubt we have talent, but we really could have used the opening cupcakes this year more than anyone given how much experience we lost. Will this be an ongoing problem for O or is it just the fact that we haven't completely established stability in this program yet?

Time will tell.

2016 was loaded but in the end a waste because of the coaching change. LB was wiped out after that draft, like LSU wasn’t even recruiting for a 3-4. Donnie Alexander started that next year & 8th yr Sr Corey Thompson was forced down from safety to play LB

Trey Quinn, John diarse, Tyrion Johnson & jazz Ferguson all transferred out at WR.

Teuhema was kicked off the team. Willie Allen sucked.

Front line OL & DL have been sparse for years.

The 2014-15 classes are what you think 2018 was.

It’s not a victory lap, but you can’t cal it a disaster after the impact it just had.

2018 aside, 2019-20-21 sure look strong though. QBs seem interested again. Casting a net nationally & it’s been fruitful. A lot of these kids will have to play earlier than expected, but I’m excited to see what they can bring.

Well he wasn’t coming to LSU under Les miles. Miles wanted him to be a DB. He was flat out not coming here.

And there haven’t been many recruits that they’ve worked harder for.

To be fair, our DLine hasn’t been much better under O. I mean it’s not like they’re dominant and the coach’s expertise is supposed to be DLine. Until Guillory and Roy last year, Saban came and got whatever he wanted from Ed.

Trey Quinn was obviously a player who got shuffled back and out of favor after the Bama game drops. But him transferring shows there were good players behind him to take his spot. We just have never had a good QB but skill players have never been an issue really. Definitely good enough to win and better than most programs.

Fair point about recent recruiting. It’s been better for Ed but results to be seen. I did not like the way he managed transfers in and out this past year. Cox is great addition after Queen blew up and left but passing on a QB and putting all eggs in the Brennan basket when you had 3 open scholarships was unwise clearly. If even just for the fact that you knew your only other options were 18yo true freshmen behind Brennan that had no benefit of spring ball etc due to Covid. Poor roster management at the most critical position.

I have heard that about Ja’Marr but you don’t know what could’ve changed. I remember when Miles first offered Beckham as a DB and he started considering The U. Things change. I would have been surprised if he turned away a 5-star WR from the city by the time Chase was a senior. We can all say a lot about Miles and his goofy ways but he didn’t miss out on skill guys much, especially WR. Saban came and took some from him but Les got the best WR talent in the state to Baton Rouge most of his tenure here. Either way, my point is that it should’nt be hard for LSU to sign a Nola kid that Saban doesn’t want. That’s like a 90% probability no matter who the head coach is. Add Saban and the percentage drops way down. I think Sumlin took Speedy from us but I don’t know of many WRs we ever missed on to non-Bama schools even as shitty as our passing game was under Miles.

I’ve read every post in this thread and it’s been an education. I’ve thought the same as most of you regarding the early departures, and really can’t blame kids that come from lower income families to make that nfl money.
And I also believe that with more game experience these younger players will excell. How many times last season did we hear announcers talking about getting starters out when we were so far ahead late in the game. That never happened.
Also letting Brady go , someone that young players can identify with that could be around for years, was an inexcusable mistake. I have trouble seeing 18 year old kids identify with E and he won’t be around much longer. But E doesn’t pose a threat to O.

We have reloaded. We have the talent to win and win now. We not only lost a shitload of talent that is proving how great they truly were in the nfl this season this far, but we lost alot of coaches. We have a totally new defense and we were short our best player on the team that just so happened to play cb this last game. Throw in another starter in kary vincent in the secondary and we had alot of fresh players out there, some of which I've never even heard of before, but had to play due to our lack of available players. Then, shelvin and chase opted out which was another huge blow to our starting lineups as well. We are young and inexperienced at key spots and we believe this team will continually improve as the season goes along. We weren't going to win a conference title or natty this season regardless man. Too many new pieces to gel that quickly. Brennan has got to develop and develop fast bc he is the key. Our defense was on the field for alot of time vs state and Brennan couldn't make plays to get them a damn breather all day long. It all lies on the qb position. If Brennan can't get it done, then we need to just move on asap and play mad johnson or Finley and get them valuable experience and build for our future bc if Brennan can't play better than he did this past weekend, we arent going to do shite this season of next anyway with him. Like I said, its all on him. The whole team has vast improvements to be made, but I have faith in our defense improving greatly, Brennan idk about. We will see.

Just look at last year's team -- it was largely stacked with Miles' recruits

Miles recruits who started last year:
Fulton
Lawrence
Logan
Divinity*
Magee
Cushenberry

Orgeron Recruits that started last year:
Burrow
Edwards-Helaire
Stevens
Chaisson
Decelus
Phillips
Delpit
Vincent
Charles
Queen
Farrell
McMath*
Jefferson
Stingley
Marshall
Chase
Lewis
Fehoko

I find it hard to give Miles the 2017 class given he was fired 4 games into the 2016 season. Orgeron had to keep that class together. Remember when Saban left, we ended up with a class of like 12 commits in 2005. It's not easy to keep a class intact after a coaching change like that.

This was answered several posts earlier.

What players do you think made a life mistake by leaving early? LSU 2020 draftees are kicking arse in the league. Please do not say Moss.

Feel free to use semantics but all these kids were committed to Miles. Ed just got them to stick. Miles also had Stingley committed and he was always coming to LSU.

Again, trying to undermine Miles’ ability to get talent is laughable and simply a false narrative. Did he have holes, specifically at QB? Sure. Kind of like the same hole Ed has now at QB. They all have them.

I’m not ready to crown Ed until he proves his recruiting long term. Miles did that and talent wasn’t really the issue.

Finish with a strong 21 and 22 recruiting class will start the reload process. Coach O just hasn’t had time

You say feel free to use semantics while giving Miles all the credit for guys that signed LOIs after he was fired. What would you call that? Oh, that’s right, semantics

Oh for fricks sake stop being so dramatic. No one is undermining your hero Les Miles. But when you try to give Miles all the credit for the 2019 roster, that is trying to undermine the guy who won the national title because he lost a game Saturday

The facts are Miles never coached those guys a single day. And you don’t need to “crown” Orgeron. He accomplished that without your blessing. Also curious, who was in charge of recruiting on Miles’ staff?

Frank Wilson. Did a helluva job too

Orgeron does have 1 title like Miles. But he also now owns 3 of the most hideous losses LSU has had in the last dozen or so years.

Going forward, I think we will be able to reload. Like others have said, the whiffs in 2018 are showing up now. But 2019 and 2020 classes were Top 5 type classes, and 2021 and 2022 appear to be on their way to being Top 5 as well.
