Actually, LSU got it's "Tigers" nickname after the confederate regiment in the civil war known as the "Louisiana Tigers" that fought with gen Lee in his Army of Northern Virginia. It later morphed into actual tigers for obvious reasons.

LSU's "Death Valley" was actually originally called "Deaf Valley", if I remember correctly beginning around the 70's, but by the 80's, the national media and fans mistakenly kept calling it " DEATH valley" so LSU decided to just start calling it Death instead of trying to correct everybody.

I liked the "Deaf Valley", wish they still used it today. The sign under the press box actually read " Welcome to Deaf Valley" I distinctly remember.

At anyrate, from what I have read, the similarities are just coincidental and nothing more.

Also, in another interesting note if anybody else remembers this, but leading up to the 96 Peach Bowl with Clemson, an LSU official (may of been Joe Dean) half jokingly proposed that the loser would give up the Death Valley moniker for their stadium. Got a little traction in the media, but the Clemson AD wanted no part of it. LSU won 10-7 if memory serves me right.

Clemson is "Death Valley" because they have a Rock from Death Valley that the players touch when they run down the hill. Frank Howard started all that. Clemson won the NC in 1981 also and went undefeated that year and was coached by Danny Ford.

Clemson's stadium was built after Tiger Stadium but has been known as Death Valley for a longer period of time and actually makes sense: there's a cemetary on a hill which overlooks the stadium

Ultimately it's mostly coincidence I think, except the stadium which it looks like we actually stole from them.

Why doesnt anybody get this right?

LSUs stadium was DEAF Valley. Mushmouths and waxears got it mixed up and started calling it DEATH Valley plus they think it sounds cooler, and the name stuck and now its the official name of the stadium.

I value originality and I think they should return the name DEAF Valley. It is afterall, one of if not the loudest stadiums in college sports.

LSU and Clemson need to square off in the next fb playoff to settle the claim who is the real Tiger and which CEO is the best.

Connection is Clemson and Auburn, they have their colors from old, faded AU practice uniforms....father of Clemson football was former AU alum (Riggs), he eventually hired John Heisman....very cool stadium and campus, went there last year to see ND game.

I believe the Clemson's traditions are more tied to Auburn than LSU.

They are the original Death Valley and we are Deaf Valley because of the noise. However through the years Deaf has become Death.

I must admit. Ours looks like it stepped off a Mayo Tours Bus and theirs stepped off the short one.

I think it is, technically blue. But it sure looks almost purple against that orange. Just like LSU's often looks blue on TV against the gold.

There are many similar things but in the past few years 1 important thing has been different....QB.

Yeah, which is why they're contending for a Natty and we're not.

Ours is totally cooler though because we say cursewords in our version

On the other hand, the Clemson fans manage to stay with the tempo of the music when they spell out C_L_E_M_S_O_N, including the pause before the "N". LSU fans can't stay with the band to save their lives. They get to the "S" and "Tigers!" ages before the band gets there.

Also, I grew up in Clemson in the 1950s. Their stadium was definitely not "Death Valley" in those days.
