Who’s old enough to remember the Busch challenge/Win Dixie showdown in the Superdome?

They should try and bring it back. It would give us some real completion to start the season.

I loved it. Would go down there with a bunch of friends for the Friday game every year.
Can’t do it in the Superdome anymore though - I think a remodel eliminated the ability to play baseball there.

I didn’t look forward to anything more than the Busch Challenge. You used to be able to turn in coke cans to Winn Dixie for discounted tickets.
My 11yr old all-star team got to play a 5 inning game on the field before LSU played Oral Robert’s in ‘90 or ‘91. Then we got to shag balls for LSU’s BP. Lyle Mouton and Pat Garrity were hitting nukes. So much so that the sound would hurt your ears in a semi-empty Dome.

Where would it be played?

Yes. LSU, Tulane, UNO paired off with three teams from Mississippi, Texas etc. Did not particularly care for indoor environment for baseball, though.

Fun times, saw Deion Sanders and Robin Ventura there. Caught a few foul balls as well.

If I remember right wasn't it real deep to straight away center field? Like 420-430 feet?

I remember. Great competition where state teams supported each other.

Great times. The Superdome renovations prevent baseball now unfortunately. It would take a little work but theoretically you could get Zephyr Field in playable condition again for an event like that. The stadium needs a few renovations too. You'd have to put the Nola Gold Rugby on the road to begin the season probably though.

Those were the days…. Skip school and and watch baseball all weekend. The clinic on Saturday morning was cool too. Tom bernhardts homerun still hasn’t landed yet.

Zephyr Field. I believe it was originally named the Winn Dixie Challenge, and changed to Winn Dixie Showdown. IIRC it was usually, LSU, UNO and Tulane vs Ole Miss, Miss. State and USM.

Was there every year as kid. We played hide and seek most of the time all over the dome

They basically have the win Dixie classic every year in Houston with the Shriners/astros foundation.

Found this recently. Alabama & Auburn were there in 2000.

I am. Saw Ben McDonald dominate Robin Ventura and Pete Incaviglia.

I think, but stand to be corrected, that it was the 3 LA teams vs 3 teams from another state? I seem to recall a year we played 3 TX teams. Ventura played for OK St., so maybe OK St., OU, Tulsa? Idk
Here we go:

Sadly, we don't have a lot of archival UNO baseball footage, but should-be national holiday, MLB Opening Day, seems like a good time to bust it out. Here are a few clips of the Privateers at the Superdome for the then-Busch Challenge (later Winn Dixie Showdown) knocking off Miami in 1987, losing to Oklahoma State in 1989, and beating Mississippi State in 1990.

February 20, 1987: LSU, Tulane and UNO vs. Miami, Florida State and Florida The Louisiana Superdome was scheduled to host the NCAA’s biggest basketball event, the Final Four tournament, at the end of March in 1987. But before that event took center stage, the Superdome hosted the Busch Challenge tournament, a novel concept by Superdome officials to pit the top three baseball programs from Louisiana against the top three teams from Florida in a round-robin format. The first Busch Challenge took place on February 20-22 and became one of the premier annual college baseball events in the country, lasting 14 years.

It was a great pre-conference tourney. Was also a good road trip early in the year. Playing in the dome early in the year insured no weather issues.
UNO & Tulane screwed it up as they wanted more revenue and Skip knew that LSU was the draw and the main revenue maker.

Speaking of zephyr field, it’s crazy that LA doesn’t have one minor league team anymore. There’s 120 minor league teams in the US. Was Zephyrs attendance that bad?

no but i remember the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras where one of the racing series thought it would be a good idea to have their cars run a street race in New Orleans.
