There's the rivalry with Arkansas (the boot), Saban (Alabama), Tulane (the rag), Auburn (tiger bowl), Ole Miss (magnolia bowl), Florida (cross division rival)

Tulane
Tulane is the closest thing to a rival with LSU and that rivalry is largely dead.
A rival is a team whose fans you live amongst and a year’s worth of bragging rights are on the line. These are neighbors whose lawn you would salt with a big “LSU”. These are teams where you can excuse the occasional dirty play because you hate the other team so much. There are no moral victories in a rivalry. Rivalries divide cities and families.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, TAMU etc. don’t qualify as rivals. You might hate them and love to win a game against them but a true rivalry doesn’t exist with any of them.
If you are old enough to have experienced the Tulane rivalry, you’d know the difference. Local news covered the payoff of bets following the game. Giving the winner a ride in a wheelbarrow was a popular bet and humiliating for the loser. It’s a real shame but it’s the truth - LSU doesn’t have a football rival.

If there's a topic here to discuss it and people don't agree, we don't have one. And it doesn't matter. We get worked up about whoever we're playing next, which is better than saying our season was good or bad based on one game.

Since the late fifties, Ole Miss. It was THE game from 1958 through 1972. LSU beat their best teams ever in 1959 and 1960. They beat one of LSU's best teams ever in 1969. LSU had Billy Cannon break their hearts until Ole Miss had their final revenge in his last game against them. Ole Miss had Archie Manning breaking LSU's hearts until his last game against them.
The intense hatred and fear of each other has never dissipated over the years no matter what the team records were. To me, this has defined what a true rivalry is. Tulane once was but is no longer on the schedule in a regular enough basis to count.

LSU doesn’t really have an obvious rival the same way Miss State/Ole Miss or Alabama/Tenn or Missouri/Kansas come to mind for me
That said there’s plenty to hate about every conference rival and I think the bad blood comes out harder when we play Florida and Bama more than anyone else lately
Also obligatory Tulane but we don’t play them anymore so

Arkansas is not our rival. They treat us as their rival, but they're way down the list for me as far as relevance.
LSU does not have a mutual rival. I think Ole Miss hates us way more than they hate Moo State, but we do not think they're on our level.

Bama isn't a rival. LSU didn't care about them until Saban went there.
LOL, what?

It was Tulane & Ole missed when I was growing up. aTm was always a game of interest for those that worked in the oilfield plus being from Texas with aggot relatives.
But now, we want to be someone's rival, and it's not happening. So we get a thread about two to three times a year wanting to know who our rival is.
There is none on the schedule next year either.

I'd say Ole Miss and Auburn.

Historically, we almost never played Auburn.

I remember the games growing up. Always a fight.

Historically, Tulane and Ole Miss. Both teams, along with LSU, were all powerhouses in the SEC so those games usually had big implications back in the day. Now I would say pretty much any team in the West is a rival since all of those games are crucial to getting to the SEC championship game. Alabama I would rank as the biggest simply due to the last several years had SEC and national championship implications. Most of the games are highly competitive and they have our former head coach which adds to it. They can deny the importance all they want but every year we get their best effort.

auburn, florida and ole miss for me. A&M and Bama are both meh for same but opposite reasons. recruiting automatically puts gumps in top 5. I have no disdain or respect for Arkansas, state, rest of east....

Sure A&M is a rival. So are Bama, AU, Ark, UF, and probably a few others. It’s not a rule that you can only have 1 or 2.
Agreed.
rival - a person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity.

Three kinds:
Rivals - aTm, Arky, Moo, Auburn, UF
Traditional Rivals - Ole Miss, Tulane
Blood Rivals - Alabama

We don't have a big in state rival anymore. But essentially UF and the west are our rivals. You compete against those teams every year for a common goal. To win the conference.
