Settle an argument for me please. I said boosters and taf. He says he's a state employee and local taxes pays it. That sounds like nonsense but he's so adamant about it.

He's got a base pay of a few hundred thousand dollars as a state employee and millions come from TAF.

Who funds Brian Kelly's wage?
Please, settle this debate.
I say boosters and taf,
But he insists it's from state.

He claims it's from local tax,
But that just sounds absurd.
His conviction is so strong,
But I can't help but be unsure.

So tell me, oh learned sage,
Who pays for Brian Kelly's wage?

The majority of all LSU coaching salaries come from TAF

Its a good question and its one about which there is a lot a myth and not a lot of definitive information.
I have always understood the HC is employed and paid by LSU at taxpayer expense, with a whole bunch of additional compensation paid by boosters and TAF (not necessarily the same thing).
I don't know if that is wrong or right, but what i do observe is that LSU does not seem eager to clarify this or the respective contributions to his compensation package.

LSU Ath Dept

They use self generated funds and donations to do it.

ETA: tax dollars are not used, but state income taxes are paid by Kelly.

The state of La. makes money off BK.

Here is the .pdf of his contract:
Brian Kelly Contract

According to the details, LSU pays him his base salary. Which is defined as $400,000.
that money comes out of LSU's pockets. Whether that's from tickets sales/marketing/merchandising/tuition/taxes, etc.

"Supplemental Compensation may be payable in whole or in part from affiliated foundation funds" (i.e. TAF)
those amounts are:
2022 = $8.6 mil
2023 - 2024 = $8.8 mil
2025 - 2026 = $9 mil
2027 - 2028 = #9.2 mil
2029 - 2030 = $ 9.4 mil
2031 - end of term = $ $9.6 mil

LSU has no choice but to make his contract public.

You just did, without me having to file a Public Records Demand.
Thanks.
So, are the funds held by the "affiliated foundations" public funds? Private funds held by a 501(c) (3)?

No government employee can make more than the President which is why that is the cap. Rest comes from TAF.

my understanding is that the funds pass through LSU en route to Kelly.
that's how his overpayment was caught.

NYPost Article

quote:

LSU accidentally overpaid Tigers football coach Brian Kelly by $1 million during the first year of a 10-year, $100 million contract, but discovered the error and has moved to correct it, the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office said Wednesday.

Kelly was overpaid $1,001,368 in supplemental payments in 2022 because duplicate payments made both to Kelly’s LLC and to the coach directly.

so it's the "supplemental income", but because it passes through LSU, it's still subject to state audits and is considered public funds.

So, his base salary comes from public funds ($400,000);
And his supplemental compensation ( $9 million or so) is also public funds.
I get it that some private donors are willing to pony us lots of money just to pay for a head football coach, and that money goes indirectly to LSU.
And b/c they become public funds they are subject to the same scrutiny as Mann's periodic expense reports for a couple hundred bucks.
Yet LSU doesn't discover a Million dollar overpayment to Kelly until the end of the year?
Whether you like him or not, Mann has a point.

except he actually doesn't.

he was audited by the legislative auditor.
the football team was audited by the legislative auditor.

asking him to provide proof of where the funds went are not accusations of theft. they are balancing books because LSU is a public entity that according to law has to show where the money is spent.
