Clayton was WR2 to Reed in 01, then WR1 in 03 when Bowe was a freshman. Bowe then became WR1 in 04 (essentially, stats wise he and Buster may have been a toss up
You could throw Henderson in there also. He had like 20TDs in 2yr after switching RB to WR, plus the really good NFL career of course.

IMO, the modern era of CFB began in '80. Since then we had a spattering of great WR's in the 80s (Martin & Fontenot, Davis & Magee). Into the 90s there was Kinchen and Kennison. But those were more isolated. Once into the 2000s, we've had an unbroken string of great WRs and I think that's where WRU began, i.e., Josh Reed.

It’s fricking Michael Clayton. Stop with your other shite. They were all good but WRU started with him.

Eddie Kennison. I remember when Hard Knocks was featuring Kansas City and they showed the latest draftee LSU's Dwayne Bowe being mentored former LSU wide receiver Eddie Kennison. That was the start of WRU to me. Bowe...Craig Buster Davis followed by Early Doucette.

Carlos Carson.

This was the best answer so far, but the real answer is “no one”.

Our WR history looked like that of a lot of great programs until the weird combos started rolling out.

Odell and Juice
Chase and Jetts
Mailk and BTJ

Those are probably all top five combos in the history of the sport.

Josh Reed, figuratively

but the answer is Clayton. Well, really Saban. As everything took off once he was in control.

Right

I was gonna follow up and say that I don’t know if there was one “founder”, as opposed to there being usually a good group headlined by some notable starting duos (sometimes trios) with guys going pro consistently. And that starts with Reed/ Clayton. With apologies to my late 90s guys who I thought were gonna do a bit more in the league like Foster, Reggie Rob, Jerel Myers.

Reed - Clayton
Clayton - Devery
Bowe - Davis - Early
Early - Byrd - Lafell
Lafell - Toliver
Toliver - Randle
Randle - OBJ
OBJ - Landry

Y’all get the picture lol. Even with the guys that had injuries, bad QB play and/ or just kinda flamed out in the NFL (Skyler, Shepard, Boutte), it’s been a helluva run.

Of course as someone mentioned, the uptick in recruiting is what really drove it.

Josh Reed started the real trend. Before him, it was just a really good WR every 5 years or so. Reed, then Clayron, Bowe, Henderson, Buster Davis, Lafell...

But if we are talking modern LSU football, it was probably Dwayne Bowe that started the trend of ELITE LSU receivers.

Correct

Before that, sure there was an occasional Carlos Carson, Josh Reed or Michael Clayton.

Bowe was better than all of them in the NFL, which is important for the discussion.

Insane when you think about it. A crazy anomaly that can no longer be called an anomaly.

Kennison's NFL sats are damn near identical to Bowe's
(yes, I know Eddie played longer)

Kennison - 548 catches ; 8,345 yds ; 42 TDs
Bowe - 537 catches ; 7,208 yds ; 44 TDs

But Kennison also had 1,528 Punt return yards and 3 TDs

also Eddie Wass the first LSU WR to go in the 1st round.

we’ve had good WRs in the past, but we really started to have the quantity in the NFL to claim the title with OBJ.

Also the not-so-heralded LSU WRs that succeed in NFL, like Gage, Chark, etc, help keep the brand alive and balance out the headscratchers that were great at LSU, then mysteriously fail in NFL.

Ok looking back, LSU has had a WR in the NFL with 1000+ yards receiving 14 of the last 20 years.

Since Odell entered the league it’s 9 of the last 10. (Odell was hurt in 2017 and Jarvis had 987 yards)

Dwayne Bowe accounted for 3 between 2006 and 2013. Missed a 4th by 3 yards in 2007.

Jonson had 2 in the early 2000 and Clayton had 1

Now correct me if I annwrong but prior to 2004 we hadn’t had an1000 yard receiver in the NFL since 1992, Eric Martin.

But he gives us 92, 89 and 88 and Carlos Carson gives us 87, 84, 83

But between 1983 and 2013 we had 12 1000 seasons total.

between 2013 and today we’ve had 15.

Part of that is the NFL passes a lot more, but also part of that is quality. Thisnyear we could have 3-4. Thomas, Nabors, JJ and Chase are all on track for well over 1000 yards.

So i would argue it really kicked off with Odell and Jarvis with Odell doing the heavy lifting.

Yeah, and Dinardo had Josh Reed sitting the bench, and was using a third team QB as his receiver, till mid season..

Davis to Reed is a 14 year gap.

Honestly I think it starts with Eddie Kennison in 1996 who playing in the NFL until 2008, by 2000 he was the only LSU WR in the NFL, it then continues

Reed 2002
Clayton and Henderson 2004
Green 2006
Bowe and Davis 2007
Doucet 2008
LaFell and Holliday 2010
Randle 2012
Beckham and Landry 2014
Chark and Gage 2018
Jefferson 2020
Chase and Marshall 2021
Nabors and Thoms 2024

We've always had great WRs but I think the run of dominant NFL WRs started with OBJ.
