I bet there are current LSU football players who have never heard of Pete Maravich.
not basketball tho. Kids still watch his videos. Google Pete Maravich and look at the hits and comments.

One had multiple books written about him, TV specials and even a movie.

One was carried off the court by OPPOSING FANS.

My grandson was mentoring a kid from Africa about 8 years ago who was touting LeBron James as tGOAT. He asked the kid if he heard of Pete Maravich and he said no. He told him to look him up at his videos. The kid came back to work that Monday and said him and his friends stayed up all night watching videos of Pete. He couldn’t believe what he saw.

He acknowledged he didn’t know who Russell and Oscar were either so it is understandable why people will be divided.

Dream was FAR better player in the NBA than Shaq overall (Shaq would admit that) but nobody really knows who he is because he isn’t on TV.

Revered is a term of honor in terms of what your contributions are towards LSU. There’s a building named after Pete. At LSU, it is Maravich because of that.

As a person who saw BOTH play at LSU (live), I'll take Shaq. Pete was a senior my freshman year at LSU, but my Dad and I saw many games that Pete played in while I was in high school in BR.

You’re full of shite with selfishness. I was in school all ; of his years and saw the talent around him. He was all we had. Shaq was the 3rd best player on his team his freshman season. How do you define a career in 1 season?

There are still NBA players stating the watch his videos to learn how he did what he did.
Books, TV equivalent 30-30 (before that was a thing. It was an hour special), a building named after him. Most importantly, the game itself today is EXACTLY what he was doing when he played - free and not backing down and pushing people around to dunk a ball.
Define “impact”.

LeBron’s “underhand pass” was from a Pete video…

You show me everyday in your posts that you might be a 6 story building, but the elevator only goes up about 5 floors. As for LSU Basketball history, Pete holds the NCAA record. He has a coliseum named after him. Jesus Christ man. Shaq was a physical force at LSU. He did not have the game yet that he developed in the pros. Pete was polished and if not for injuries he would have been a star in the NBA as well.

The question was LSU Basketball History. You seem to be using the NBA popularity and success as your measuring stick. Hell, Stanley Roberts was a more polished big man than Shaq at LSU. This is an awful take by you, but, I'm not surprised.

Pistol is revered for what he accomplished on the court at LSU.

Shaq is revered more for what he’s done after LSU. He carries and elevates the brand.

Met them both

Without any doubt the most magnetic is shaq. Pistol Pete was a bit aloof.

Shaq is out front and as large as he is- he presents even larger. He’s bigger than life.
Pete didn’t want that sort of attention but he was a hell of a good basketball player.

Pistol for sure. Shaquille was good, but he can’t hold a candle what Pete was able to accomplish.

Hate to disagree. I was fortunate to be able to watch him play his entire varsity career. Home games at the "cow palace".

I'm not taking away anything from Pete but the statement that "he was all we had", I think that is a bit overplayed. That does not diminish the legendary showmanship that Pete thrilled us with but we don't need to exaggerate to acknowledge his greatness,

Bill Newton was a good player and he and Al Sanders both played in the ABA after their college careers, Sanders was one of 50 players on the LSU all century team and second all-time at LSU in rebounding ever. Tommy Hess was pretty good to.

In fact the 1970-71 LSU team, the team the year after Pete left, which had all 3 of these guys on it, had a better record than all but one of the 3 teams that Pete played on in the years previous.

Now as far as their contribution to NBA careers obviously Shaq wins in a landslide

I wouldn’t call it a “landslide”. Pete didn’t win the championships, but he was FAR from a bum in the NBA. He only played 10 years because of injuries, but in those 10 he was a 5x All-Star and and 4x All NBA. When he was healthy he was one of the best players in the NBA. He was chosen as one of the 50 best NBA players of all time.

Pete is like Cannon... They are statues and names on buildings. The older fans know them well. The middle aged fans know the nostalgia. The younger fans only know the names.
Shaq is a currently high level celebrity. That is exactly how I would answer. Shaq has more celebrity. Pete has more reverence.

Off-Subject, the freshman-only reminds me of the realities of that time. There was a UCLA national championship team that only had one loss; it was to that year's UCLA freshman team.
