Love em both. Saw Pete & Shaq in person. I’ve told this story before, when the Jazz were comfortably up Pistol would bank his second free threw off the top of the board. I was in floor seats when he hurt his knee

Basketball-wise, Pete.
For what he built after basketball and being an ambassador for LSU, Shaq.

While at LSU Pete is more of a legend. In addition to shooting lights out his behind the back passes and between his legs dribbling was new, at least to LSU. Add his long hair and floppy socks, also new, and you have legend.

They are both very loved
But no one is revered like Pistol Pete
He is literally the greatest college basketball player in history and Shaq agrees.

Revered? Pete...i mean the frickin gym is named after him.
More successful? Shaq, hands down.

Shaq definitely had a more impactful NBA career. Pistol killed it in college and had a good BA career too.

One could argue Bob Pettit over both of them. Besides the LSU legendary play, Pettit was NBAs all time leading scorer at one point and was all NBA everything. Great great player and ambassador for LSU. Still a great ambassador at 92.
Pettit was a far more polished big than Shaq was in college and pro ball. Shaq was dominant and one of my favorite all time players and more importantly HUMAN BEINGS on this planet. What’s hilarious to me is how different people treated MAR/CJ than Shaq while both are Muslim. Crying shame.
As far as Pete’s impact, the defining word you used was “lore”. Pete has far more “lore” than Shaq at LSU. He was the GOAT in college. I was getting my degree when he was there so I’m probably a little biased.

That’s a tough question. I’m in my late 50s and only remember Pete from his jazz days. There was no ESPN or social media to highlight his greatness. Both are great in their own way.

I watched him play every game he played at home while at LSU..including the famous freshman/varsity game before about 50 fans...of which I was one.
I sat at half court because my student id got us in every sporting event on campus. I always went early when the gates opened at the Cow Barn and studied while I waited for the game to start. It was a very special time in LSU sports history.
Shaq has proven to be great, but not as much while at LSU. He was young and developing. His size and athleticism was extremely rare to see.
But, Pete was the biggest thing to every happen at LSU, with Shaq, who I love, a distant second.

When you look up quotes, and see that NBA HOF’ers have been quoted along the lines of “I really tried to model my game after Pistol Pete”. Magic, Isiah, and Jordan have all said similar
I have yet to hear a HOFer say “I really tried to model my game after Shaq”

I wasn’t alive to see Jackie Robinson, or Josh Gibson, or Satchel Paige play…. But I agree that all 3 (and many more) could be counted as some of the all time best - even vs todays players.

[At that time NCAA rules prohibited first-year students from playing at varsity level, which required Maravich to play on the freshman team. In his first game, Maravich put up 50 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists against Southeastern Louisiana College.]
Pardon me....I saw him play that game described above in the old Cow Palace(John M. Parker) AND am still alive and well! He did things back in the late 60s that a lot of guys today can do but man.....think about the time when he was doing this. Only guys doing anything like that back then were the Globetrotters. His passing and ball handling were amazing, but...Pete was the best ever at drawing-the-foul while shooting. Go back and look at his averaging 43 pts per game, I would bet 1/4-1/3 of them were free throws.

Oh, that's completely wrong. I went with my parents to see Pete play numerous times and watched any game when the Tigers were on television.
After all these years, Pete is one of my two favorite athletes of all time, the other being Mickey Mantle. For those of us who actually saw Pete play at LSU, we knew we were watching a player the likes of which we would never see again.
