There is no comparison when it comes to their college career.

I’ll put it this way, I bet there are current LSU football players who have never heard of Pete Maravich.

It’s Shaq in terms of name recognition, dude has been a marketing genius since college and has turned into a larger than life persona

LOL...that says everything about younger people if they all think like you. They didn't see him, so it is shaq right?

There is no comparison to their college career, it is Pete in a landslide. There is absolutely no debate.

Shaq obviously had a MUCH better NBA career.

"Revered" brings a lot into play, but Pete's innate talent and extraordinary skill and creativity is unmatched. Shaq was big and a unique character, and revered for that, but Pete was and is still a stand-alone basketball player and flat out mesmerizing to watch.

Sad that he died at 40 with so much left to give.

Why not both and I saw both of them play.

I'll say Pete in college and Shaq in the pros. When Pete was a freshman and couldn't play varsity his freshman year, the freshman games would draw a larger crowd than the varsity. And, not just at LSU. I think I remember that in Pete's varsity years many other schools most attended home games were when Pete and LSU came to town. He was ahead of his time.

Love Shaq and I don't think anyone would argue that Pete had a better pro carrier than Shaq (minus free throw shooting, LOL).

As a person who saw BOTH play at LSU (live), I'll take Shaq. Pete was a senior my freshman year at LSU, but my Dad and I saw many games that Pete played in while I was in high school in BR.

IMO, Pete played only for himself and was a very selfish player. I'll take Shaq both as a player and as man.

Pete's stats may never be matched. Shaq's love for the program may never be matched. If we can find success in football, baseball, women's basketball, track, gymnastics, then we can find it in mens basketball. Let's do it!

No one is arguing that.

However, in terms of name recognition over the last 50 years, it's Shaq by a landslide.

2 big things played into that, basketball broadcasts booming in the 80's and 90's, and Shaq being more willing to ham it up in front of the camera and take on vanity projects outside of basketball.

Pete was a recluse who went from sheltered child to crazy psycho conspiracy theorist to born again Christian. Nothing really marketable about him other than what he did on the basketball court.

My brother, who is an alum of an opposing SEC school, tells me that hoards of students would gather to just watch Shaq get off the bus. They didn’t have tickets to the game. Just watched him exit the bus, then they headed back home.

That said, Shaq is more revered globally, but Maravich might be slightly more revered locally. It is close.

Pete, like Billy Cannon, is a legend and belongs to the ages. The numbers, the stories, the eyewitnesses? It's Pete and not really close.

It IS closer, IMO, between Pete and Chris Jackson. CJ was the 80s version of what it must have been like watching Pete.

Shaq will go down as the all time greatest ambassador for LSU and a top 3 all time hoop-er on any LSU basketball list, but he wasn't Pete, and he wasn't quite CJ (in college).

I saw both play many, many times. To this day, Pete is the greatest COLLEGE basketball player I have ever seen play for the P&G.

Chris Jackson was a bigger COLLEGE BASKETBALL phenomenon than Shaq. Shaq is clearly a much bigger overall phenomenon now, and has a rightfully deserved legacy at LSU because of it.
