Shaq.
He's a reserve police officer.
He's a certified platinum recording artist. (Shaq Diesel)
He starred in some of the greatest movies ever. (Blue Chips, Kazaam).
He's had several television shows. (Shaq's Big Challenge, Shaq Vs.)
He's a 15 time all-star.
He's a 3 time NBA Finals MVP.
He's won 2 NBA scoring titles.
He's an LSU GRADUATE!
As a "sports figure", he's rivaled by the likes of Michael Jordan, Muhammed Ali, and Tiger Woods. Nobody in LSU history comes close, even the legendary Maravich.

This thread proves my point about LSU generational near sightedness. No one has even mentioned Bob Pettit.
I started to mention him earlier, but then I got distracted and didn't finish reading the thread.
As for Petit,
quote:
In 1954, his number 50 was retired at LSU. He was the first Tiger athlete in any sport to receive this distinction. In 1999, he was named Living Legend for LSU at the SEC Basketball Tournament. He is a member of the LSU Hall of Fame. Bob Pettit Boulevard in Baton Rouge, LA is named after him.
When you say "in LSU history," I think it's difficult to judge because that is a very long history. If you wanted to talk about decades or eras, it might be easier.
Y.A. Tittle, Pete Maravich, Bob Petit, Shaquille O'Neal, Billy Cannon were all LSU icons or still are. That's why it's a good thing we don't have to have a winner for #1 sports figure.

Shaq hands down. He is the most recognized.
1 Shaq
2 Pete
3 Faulk
4 Cannon

In the multimedia era, it's Shaq.
All-Time it's close between Maravich and Cannon. Because of football's importance, it would default to Cannon, except for two things:
1.) His legacy it tainted by off-the-field issues, particularly post-career ones
2.) Maravich was simply a giant in NCAA basketball history

Has anyone said Cecil Collins yet?

Not many people outside of Louisiana know who Billy Cannon is.
Mostly because he played 50 years ago. People didn't get the media coverage that they do today. Cannon won the Heisman. Enough said.

Shaq has his number retired INSIDE an arena named after Pistol Pete..
Good point but Shaq has surpassed Pete because of his personality and success in the NBA. I love the Pistol but how many NBA championships does he have? Also: how great of an ambassador to LSU was he? Shaq wins in those categories IMO.

I'd say a tossup between the Pistol and Shaq. Two of the NBA's 50 greatest. My dad would have said Bob Petit or Billy Cannon.

Aren't we limiting this to what he did at LSU?

The topic says "Who is the #1 sports figure in L.S.U. history?" I took it as not necessary limited to his time at LSU, but just the #1 that went to LSU.
I could be wrong.
