So when you give people more choice and half the audience leaves that means it’s just as relevant? Gotcha.
You cited the 1985 NCAA Finals tv ratings as your evidence CBB is a "niche" sport. I'm telling you that's weak evidence because the ratings for most sporting events in 1985 (except the Super Bowl) are going to be larger than events today because at that time most people only had three or four channels. So if you watched TV that night your options were the basketball finals or (likely) a sit-com on another network. That meant a lot of people who probably weren't big basketball fans still watched. Today, they don't have to.
If you look at the list of the ten most watched college football games you'll see 5 of them were in the 1990's. The other 5 were in the 2000's, with the most recent being 2015...a decade ago. Does that mean college football is a declining, "niche" sport too?
LSU fans don't really follow college basketball much because LSU hasn't been consistently good for nearly 40 years now. But that doesn't mean the sport as a whole is a niche sport. Networks wouldn't pay $10.8 BILLION for a 14 year contract to broadcast a "niche" sport. It's a bit ironic that an LSU fan would call college basketball a niche sport, given most on the board actually do follow/love a niche sport...college baseball, a sport that virtually has no following outside of the southeastern US (that's not a knock on college baseball).
I never said the popularity of CBB hasn't declined from the 1980's. In fact, I specifically said it has. But I was refuting your claim that it was a "niche" sport. Because it isn't.

If you didn't care, why make a post about it.

I would love LSU basketball to be good/great again. The 80s and early 90s were fun.
They have been so bad lately it's not worth the time and frustration to watch them.

If you didn't care, you wouldn't be in here bitching about it.

I want LSU to be good at all sports, including baskeball. My “passion” for LSU basketball and interest in the sport overall has certainly had some ups and downs throughout the years, mostly correlated with our success or lack thereof.
That said, I can honestly say that at the present moment I have basically zero concern or passion for LSU basketball.
I can only speak to my feelings, but it’s a lot easier for me to forget about basketball than it would be to forget about football or baseball. We’ve had down years/stretches in those sports as well over the years, and I never felt myself not caring like I don’t care about the current men’s basketball program.

Dude, no one cares about CBB. I don't care about morons betting anymore than I care about poors buying lottery tickets. Less than 5 percent of the population could name a single CBB player. Back when CBB wasn't niche, the players were cultural figures. Ewing, Shaq, Laettner, were all cultural icons while playing. Maybe Zion is the last player who was in pop culture as a player? You are correct that college baseball being a niche sport.

quote:Ridiculous comment. Again, the tv contract for MBB NCAAT was extended to over $8 billion for the next 6 years. That’s more than one billion per tournament. Broadcast companies aren’t paying that amount if advertisers aren’t gobbling up ads and advertisers aren’t gobbling up ads if no one is watching.

YOU don’t like CBB, that’s fine. Do you. But to project your likes and dislikes as a fact for everyone else is childish.

If you don’t care why are you caring so much?

The OP asked a question of those who care and don’t care. I answered. A few took issue and I responded. Just having fun. But MBB is a niche sport no one cares about.

Plenty of people care about it, it’s the second biggest money maker in college athletics.
