Ty Floyd 17 strikeouts was definitely top 3 in my book.

Evans probably #6or7 for a pitcher

Hellmers going 5.2 scoreless innings against UNC last year should have been the answer here. I don’t think anyone on earth could have seen it coming and it may have been the gutsiest performance ever out of an LSU player in any sport. I will forever hate that we didn’t win that game for him.

Idk about all time…I was too young to really remember the 90s run.

But I can tell you that in 2023 CWS alone…

Skenes 7.2ip, 12k, 2r vs Tennessee
Ackenhausen 6ip, 7k, 0r vs Tennessee elimination game
Herring 4.2ip in relief, 7k, 0r vs Wake Forest elimination game
Skenes 8ip, 9k, 0r vs Wake Forest elimination game
Floyd 8ip, 17k, 3r vs Florida G1 of Championship
Hurd 6ip, 7k, 2r vs Florida G3 of Championship
Cooper 9.2ip, 8k, 1r over 5 games in the CWS

Pretty incredible shite coming in an 8 game stretch

Gutsiest performance by a tiger….maybe ever

Ben pitching 7 for a win in game 1 and then closing the second game the same day was legendary. Sent LSU to Omaha over a TAMU team that was widely regarded one of the greatest ever considering how dominant they were.

LSU has had some great performances from Lloyd Peever including starting the season with 39 straight innings without a walk. Greatest season I’ve ever seen considering how much more dominant he was at 14-0 and a 1.98 ERA with those bats.

But in the end LR is a mid week type team. Would people be saying all time performance if he did it on a Tuesday in march…

No they would not say it under those circumstances but those weren’t the circumstances. It was a win or go home game in the regionals.

Brett Laxton. His freshman performance was better.

Way too long of a thread for no one to have mentioned Nola’s complete game shutout in the 2013 supers against Oklahoma.

No.
Nothing against Evans but we were playing Little Rock.
Thank God we had him though.

I would say one of the best non Omaha performances ever. Or one of the tops in the box of all time. But including Omaha I wouldn’t put it in the top 20.

It’s time to remove best from anything associated with Cowan.

There are so many impressive pitching performances that it’s hard to rank them. It was a clutch performance in the post season and will be remembered. Is it more memorable than 17K’s in a game in CWS Finals? Certainly no.

No, in the end LR was a regional finalist, with the most dangerous and potent batter in the regional. What they were 2 weeks ago is irrelevant.

And remember, they didn't just go nuts on us Sunday. They're the team that sent DBU and Rhode Island home.

Is it top 5? I'm guessing not.

One of the top 5 or 10 performances ever? Absolutely not. Was it a great performance? Yes. Cannot be prisoner of the moment here. Performances in the CWS are going to be above this one. Ack, Hurd, Floyd, Skenes, Gilbert, Hess, Lange, and even Herring.

Evans performance is comparable to Fontenot against FSU. Obviously Evans would rank higher because he was able to come away with the victory. Coleman against Oregon in '21 was a dominating performance. Helmers last year, Ben McDonald, Aaron Nola on several occasions.

With all that being said though it was an excellent performance but when you take away the prisoner of the moment you realize there has been way too many performances like this one where it cannot be a top 10 performance by an LSU player or Pitcher in the history of the program.

You do understand the significance of what he did last night?

Yeah, we all appreciated it. It was awesome. It was also the third best playoff pitching performance for LSU THIS YEAR. And LSU has been seeing these types of performances for 30 years.

What about Aaron Nola going 8 innings with 0 earned runs against UCLA in Omaha? Paul Skenes going 8 innings with 0 earned runs against Wake? There have been a shite ton of classic playoff pitching performances by LSU players.

You asked if it was top 10? Not even close.

But if we go on to win title #8, Evans' performance will go down in history as one of the most significant.

Significant? Sure. If we win a title then it’s only competing with eight playoffs. But every one of those years has multiple pitching performances without which we lose the title.

2023: Skenes against Tennessee and Wake; Floyd against Florida; Ack/Cooper against Tennessee; Herring against Wake; and even Thatcher Hurd with the 3 inning save against Wake when a single run would have ended it. And that’s just in a single championship season.

I would say Laxton had the best performance. 16 k’s, 3 hits, and a complete game back when championship was one game do or die.

Floyd pitched a great game but let’s not forget he gave up 3 runs in 8 innings. LSU has had many times in postseason history where LSU pitchers threw as long of longer and allowed less runs.

1993 Laxton in CWS Championship game vs Wichita State went 9 shutout with 16 K’s.

2009 Anthony Ranaudo in the regional pitched al 10 inning complete game to beat Baylor 3-2.

2013 Aaron Nolan 9 shutout innings in a Super Regional to beat Oklahoma and a top 10 MLB draft pick 1-0.

2017 Caleb Gilbert in CWS against Oregon State going 7 1/3 and allowing one run.

2023 Paul Skenes 8 scoreless against Wake Forest and the top 10 MLB pick matching him inning for inning.

We lost this game but Fontenots outing in the supers against FSU was a pretty gutsy outing too..
