Why stop there? What about the year that we are currently living in?

Clearly Lane has improved and the landscape is different where an Ole Miss can compete better than in the past (which also means the institutional advantages of LSU aren't as severe).

But last year is a legit warning sign. They had a 1st round QB and went ALL in and didn't even make the playoffs.

The biggest issue with Lane is the contract it will take.

This is a REALLY bad year to be making a major CFB hire.

I even made a thread about that exact problem

Yeah I think Lane is far from a sure thing. He’ll be entertaining and you’ll always have a good offense, but that’s i think all we can say for sure.

So no answer. Ok and just to be clear I don’t think he’s leaving Ole Miss but to say he wouldn’t be a good hire for LSU is silly.

My hesitation with Lane is gonna be the price tag. But also, if you step back and look at it, he's a D2 qb transfer away from probably having 3 or 4 loses this year. He had Simmons as the starter and he just happen to get hurt. The whole situation this year looks a little lucky. I get ya create your own luck as a coach and I think he's a really good coach and would be a great fit but I just don't see it as, we hire Lane and are just never gonna have disappointing 4 loss seasons with some really rough patches along the way. Would he still be viewed as a 10 year 100 million guy with a little less luck?

Historically I've been one of the bigger LK defenders on this board.

He's clearly the best option in a down year of CFB coaching options.

But is he 12/170M good?

Simply because LSU is LSU
And Ole Miss is Ole Miss, peaking right now, the dumpster fire going on right now at LSU- he stills knows politics aside he can build a Monster, not just wear a costume. He knows this deep down, he very smart.

frick no. you can hire Matt Campbell or Chris Kleiman for half that and i’m not sure they would do worse here.

So which do you think he will lose to, South Carolina, The Citadel, Florida, or Mississippi State? He'll need to lose to multiple of those teams in order to not make the playoffs.

Possibly none of them. Possibly South Carolina, Florida, or Moo State. Probably not any two of them.

Lane is the shiny object the easily excitable crowd likes to chase after and play with. Imagine if Les had the lead vs UGA on the road and got manhandled in the 4th during a playoff year ………… The Lane crowd says no big deal.

I fear if he is named our next head coach, we end up right back here in 5 or 6 years, paying another buy out!

That's the case with ANY coach LSU (or anyone else) hires. there are no guarantees. Short of hiring Kirby Smart, no one has as many SEC wins over the last 3.5 years than Lane...which is somewhat relevant given LSU also plays in the SEC.

The question isn't who is the best "lock" among every coach, everywhere. It's who is the biggest "lock" among the people who would consider taking the LSU job?

Will I be disappointed if Kffin doesn't get the job? No. But I'm not going to pretend there is a "sure thing" out there among the candidates

You may be right.

Who is the guy that is certain to lead LSU where they want to go?

Agree, he has learned and matured since the Tennessee days.

What about the years Saban and Kirby had the #1 or #2 rosters but still missed out?

Kiffin is trending massively in the right direction. He’s a late bloomer on the maturity front.

All that said, OM will never have a roster to win a natty. They will have some great players at times but no depth. Rosters ranked in the 20’s don’t win championships.

Again, it’s ole miss. Was that really a championship team? They def shouldn’t have loss to Kentucky and Florida but it isn’t like they were a juggernaut. Definitely should have made the playoff though so that was a disappointment. Let’s see how this year goes.
