The rant wasn’t anything like today’s rant in 2007.

As is the case when LSU has hired most new coaches, I had no idea who he was!

Seemed like a good hire. At the time, felt like a coach that could get Notre Dame to Omaha and had LSU/Louisiana ties would do very well at LSU
Remember back then there wasn’t social media though really, so this is our first baseball hire in the social media age. So there’s a TON more opinions/discussions about this hire than there were back then
The coaching search feels a lot more “high profile” this time around than it did back then
It definitely wasn’t a OMG Grandslam hire but it felt like a solid hire and a fit, after we learned about him because he was relatively unknown to most when we hired him

*McDonnell
All I care about at this point in a coach is his name is simple enough for the dumbasses on this site to be able to spell his fricking name correctly

The Rant was unanimous about getting rid of Smoke. A little split between Bianco/Mainieri. Skip had a ton of equity built up and it was still his show.

I was 17 so not like I was old and grizzled at the time but I seem to remember a general optimism with the hire. He wasn’t a name I knew at the time and I seem to remember a lot of people wanting Bianco but I don’t remember anyone hating the hire. At least not in my circle.

Coming from Smoke to CPM was like hiring Will Wade after Johnny Jones

Careful, people will watch you like a hawk and jump your arse for the simplest of typos.

Honestly nobody knew who he was......same with Dinardo and Saban..... we just went with it. It worked out for the most part.....

The best explanation on the Smoke to Mainieri transition.
Smoke preferred to hang out at Sammy’s on Highland than recruit. He left much of it up to Turtle Thomas. Mainieri was a breath of fresh air.

Not a bad analogy. I do remember feeling in both cases like “ah yes, thank God an actual organized adult is in charge again”

That was my frustration from today’s game coming out
I wasn’t here but I remember the general consensus around town was positive
I am trying to be positive & not listen to all the rumors, hoping Woodward makes a good choice not influenced by others

Weird that most didn’t know who he was, especially considering that LSU has probably the largest baseball fanbase of any school. In 2005, that was even magnified.
I was at school then and loved the hire. Again, no echo chambers on social media or whatever. I just figured anybody that takes Notre Dame to a CWS and knocks off Rice in Omaha must be damn good.

If using social media as a general temperature check, LSU baseball has over 300,000 twitter followers. By far more than anyone in college baseball.

I remember he said that TC had a great interview and his entire plan for the program was computerized. (As opposed to a Binder)
Better late than never.
Get him in here, pay him what he wants and be done with it. (Like Kim)...........

Most weren’t born then.

He was replacing Smoke. Anything was an improvement.

I forgot Corbin was interviewed. Great point and added context to this post.
