Go ahead and laugh, but im right and youre wrong. Laird anywhere near the top of the lineup is a mistake, period. And yes, the "stats" back that claim up.

Why you "quote" stats?

What the hell is going on in here?!

I know this may difficult to fathom, but the higher a player bats in the lineup, the more times he comes to the plate. The more times a player comes to the plate, the greater the probability that he's up in a crucial situation late in the game. The law of averages spells this out for you.

Thats true, but in no way can you predict who will come up in a tie game in the 9th. Stop being ridiculous.

So you build a lineup based on the probability of late-game heroics. Got it.

No you build a lineup based on the probability of scoring more runs, obviously. Im gonna go out on a limb and say that a lineup that has the best hitters at the top of it will score more runs.

Of course you cant lol. It's hypothetical. Why wouldnt you want the best hitters hitting at the top lol? I cant believe we're actually arguing this.

And of that .371, how many of those did he drive into the gap?

Because you want your best players in position to drive in runs

Or one run down in the 9th in the CWS. Morris was batting in the nine hole in 96. Sometimes you just have to trust a coaches feel for the game and his players.

What do you mean by best hitter? Avg.? OBP? Slg.? HR?

My point is that is way too general. Different hitters have different styles and are successful for different reasons. What if a guy hits singles, but steals 25 bases? What if a guy has great speed and causes 7 more errors on the infield? You are right that baseball is all about manufacturing runs but it's not as simple as "all the good hitters go here, and all the bad hitters go there."

Best Hitters = Combination of making the least amount of outs (OBP) and driving the ball (SLG). OPS weighted heavier on OBP than SLG.
