to me i like the balance of having a great hitter somewhere around the 6th-8th hole.

LSU is blessed to have Ibarra and Jones later in the lineup.

I really hope McMullen is back soon because he is an incredible leadoff hitter. It just works. To me more than anything about a lineup.. is simply what works. He is also definitely the guy I want getting the most opportunities with the most at bats.

With McMullen out...

Ibarra - 433
Bregman - 432
Rhymes - 411
Katz - 467
Jones - 382
Foster (DH) - 423
Ross - 291
Stevenson - 288
Laird - 355

LSU is incredibly RH heavy but L/R balance isnt really an issue when you have 3-4 of the hitters with the quality of the top 4 in this lineup.

I revise my post and flip-flop Katz and Rhymes. Katz cleanup now.

Tell me why its wrong and how you would construct a better lineup than this one.

Ross is a clutch RISP hitter. And jones not behind our big bats

There's no other spot to hit him. Where else would he fit?

For starters, you have Bregman in the 2 hole. He is the best hitter on the team and should hit in the 3 hole for the rest of this season and every game for the next 2 years.

Second. Christian Ibarra - lead off?

So by your logic, Ibarra and Bregman should get the most ABs with a low chance of RISP. Stevenson should see more ABs than Laird. And Rhymes, with a flat swing resulting in line-drive and groundball singles (or DP, whichever you prefer), should be before Katz with the 2Bs and HRs.

That's old school logic that is outdated and is based on no fact whatsoever. It's a fact that the 2 hole hitter should be one of the best hitters on the team because he comes up to bat with the most high leverage situations and he should also be a very high OBP guy. Bregman is the best or 2nd best hitter on the team.

The no.3 hole is the least important spot of the top 5 in the batting order. The no.3 hitter actually comes to the plate on average with fewer runners on base than the no.4 and no.5 hitters, so yes, I would want Rhymes batting 3rd and Katz who is the best hitter with the most power in the cleanup. This is based off of heavy statistical analysis, not some dated 20th century standard that has the logic "well this is how it's always been done so it must be right".

What fact exactly is it based on that the 2 hole hitter is the best overall hitter on the team?? This is going to be good...

He is, by far and away, the best overall hitter on LSU's team.

He will hit in the 3 hole for every game in the rest of his career at LSU, barring injury.

Of course he will. Mainieri is about as old school as they come so he will def slot him in the 3rd hole. You do realize that baseball has taken a turn over the last decade right? There are people out there that are extremely smart that crunch numbers for a living. Im basing my lineup off of a sabermetric lineup that is optimized to score the most amount of runs based on placing the best hitters in positions that are on avg the highest leveraged.

Player A - 385/432/570
Player B - 378/467/622

Best freshman in the country maybe, but certainly not "far and away" the best overall hitter on LSU's team.

Guess I have to go on my knees in the corner on some rice....what are you, my fricking Dad? No, no one wants to have a real baseball discussion. We're discussing how to optimize LSU's lineup with McMullen out, and by the looks of how many people actually want Mark Freakin Laird leading off for this team, this topic certainly needs to be discussed.
