Transplanted Texan here. Dad retired out of Barksdale AFB in 68 and we've been here ever since.

Grew up not caring about college sports...way more into the NFL.

Around end of middle school.....the P/G light bulb went off after attending a game in TS with friends.

Made a decision then that I would be attending NO other school for college.

Enrolled in fall of 79 and spent 3 1/2 glorious years in BR. Had to come home the last year and finish at LSUS because my parents pulled the plug on the whole gig after I had made it clear that my double major was to be in fraternity and partying.

Haven't regretted one minute of any decision involving LSU.

I'm an alumni and think it's stupid that some alums have this idea in their heads. As far as i'm concerned, it's no different than professional sports. People lock on to a team and fall in love with it for whatever the reasons may be. I can't see why that's a bad thing.

I mean hell, I've been a lifelong Red Sox fan and have never even been to Boston

Anyone that says they don't understand how non-alumni can be fans or shouldn't be fans is fricking stupid.

they can NEVER appreciate the experience like one who attended and graduated from the University

bullshite statement is bullshite.

I also live in Georgia. I am a LSU alumnus. Both of my boys are in college at in state school (Kennesaw State University). The oldest is a die hard LSU fan. He actually went to LSU for 2 years before transferring to KSU. The costs for attending an out of state school are about double what would be spent going to an in state school. Just because a person doesn't attend/graduate LSU doesn't make them any less of a fan. Frankly, a person is stupid to pay twice as much to go to LSU than stay in state. My two cents.

I’ve been through the same thought process as you. Been going to games in Tiger Stadium since 1998. Sat through some really good and really bad times. At one point, I think I had been to 8/10 of the largest crowds in TS ever. For a variety of reasons, the institution on my diploma does not say LSU. Does that me me less of a fan? I don’t think so. LSU fan hood is a bond bound by passion and experience. Being an alum certainly aids in that, but doesn’t eliminate it. You don’t have to justify your fan hood.

you should have lobbied to get the oos fees waived because of alumni status, I was able to, and have friends that were successful too, I basically pointed out how many family members attended, multiple degrees, TAF, donations, a couple played sports, blah, blah, blah, they were like, OK,OK, enough already! we'll waive the fees

It's the non-alumni fans that are only fans when it is convenient that kills me. Alumni fans that do this are even worse. Alumni or not, just be loyal.

and we have the opposite, I know a few LSU alums, my sister is one of them, that have never been back to LSU since graduation, know nothing, and could care less about LSU sports, or anything LSU, for that matter

Some of the worst fans that I know are non-alumni (just speaking on my experience, not a broad statement), so whenever they start spouting off some dumb BS I just look at them and say "You didn't even go there". Usually shuts them up.

It's stupid but I get a kick out of it. Lots of family and friends who are die hard non-alumni. You don't have to be alumni to be a great fan, I just enjoy laughing at the miserable ones.

Ive been an LSU fan since I was a kid about 10 or 11. I started watching in about 2004 I believe? Whatever year when we lost to Iowa on that last second hail mary pass in the capitol one bowl is when I officially pledged my fandom. I have not wavered since.

I grew up in Louisiana. All of my family is from Louisiana, and most still live there. Before my parents, no one from my family went to college, let alone graduated. But everyone supported LSU. My dad was recruited to play football there in the 80s, but he elected to go to Grambling where he would start all 4 years, instead of sit on the bench for atleast 2 years... My mom went to LSU her first 2 years in school. But later transferred to be near that Grambling All-American defensive linemen whom she met in high school(Great decision mom )

Anyways, we moved to Georgia in 2005 after Rita. Although our area was largely spared from Katrina. Our local economy suffered. My dad was laid off from her job, and my mom received a paycut. My parents were already frustrated and ready to leave. After Rita caused our house some minor damage and slight flooding, they had enough altogether. So we moved to Atlanta.

I have been in Atlanta since, but never lost my Louisiana roots. I have been to about 4 or 5 LSU games in my lifetime I think. (2 of them maybe don't count, as they were in the GA dome).

When it came time for college, I puked at the thought of betraying LSU and going to UGA. I was accepted to my dream school, LSU. But I decided it would be better for me to attend a local school where I can get scholarships, etc. Instead of dishing out thousands and thousands for out-of-state loans.

I may have even played for another University, but my heart has been purple since the 1950’s. Wanna bet on who knows and appreciates LSU the most, a non-alumni, or you, Bozo?

This. I only have a problem with non alumni that stir up controversy and bitch incessantly.

If you are a good fan, there is plenty of room regardless of where/if you went to school.

I technically went to school at LSU...

Took a summer chemistry class in high school at the lab there.

I went elsewhere because I had an opportunity to play a college sport but wasn't good enough for LSU.

I never attended LSU however a family member has served on the Board of Supervisors of LSU , a family friend has served as athletic director, my uncle was the team caption on the LSU football team and his granddaughter was one of the golden girls for four years. I live in Louisiana but circumstances did not afford me the opportunity to attend the flagship school of our state but say what you want – I am an LSU fan and have been since the middle 40’s (yes I’m old).

I did attend one of the Louisiana colleges (Universities now) that is currently a member of the Southland Conference and was once written up in the school paper for disrespecting the football team because I carried a transistor radio to listen to the LSU/Florida game while attending our own. The problem was that LSU scored about the same time that our team lost a fumble and the section I was in all cheered. That was the only game I attended there. Every week-end I returned home (the farm) and listened to LSU Football on the radio (very few games were televised back in the day even if you could get reception) every Saturday during football season with family and friends.

So you have to be head in the sand and can't be upset unless you're an alumnus. Got it.
