If Johnson is on staff and we only have 9 assistant coaches, who the hell is going to coach special teams?

The only way I see anything working is if Ensminger is on the shadow staff.

There are only 9 assistant coaches.

1) Aranda-DC
2) Canada-QB & OC
3) Raymond-DB
4) Jenkins-DL
5) Juluke or whoever coaches RBs
6) Craig or whoever coaches WRs
7) Grimes-OL
8) Johnson-OLB
9) Special Teams or TE

With the restrictions, the Johnson hire really confuses me as we are extremely solid with Defensive coaches already.

Typically in a 3-4 offense you have an ILB and OLB coach. I think Aranda needs an OLB coach considering he is DC and AHC as well as ILB coach.

I understand the dilemma you're presenting, but i think the OLB coach is a necessary/important hire to make.

I'd love to have Johnson stay as a GA, and if he has already finished his classes as a grad student, then as a member of the shadow staff. Or we can shift Ensminger to shadow staff. However, Dellenger said Ensminger will stay on as a TE coach, most likely.

This means that there is no special teams coach, which is insane. I don't know if there is another team in the country that doesn't have a special teams coach. Maybe O is really happy with Bobby April as a consultant, but it still seems like a really odd decision to me.

Yeah that's quite a dilemma. I think we would want a good recruiter in that position and maybe keep april as a consultant. Ensminger would be a good shadow staff guy, imo, but who knows if O will put him there. Seems like that would be the only way though.

Yeah, I don't see any other way. Ensminger is a good coach, but doesn't seem to be a huge recruiter. It would be a shame to see him off the field, but I can see him making the same salary on shadow staff.

Yes and make Craig the TE coach with Ensminger focusing on them while on shadow staff. I would assume Craig would be taking over that role in name, right?

We have made some great coaching hires.

If Special Teams is the last position to fill, then we are having a good day.

If O can get Bobby April to cover spring practice, then we don't need a ST coach until fall practice begins.

We are in very good shape.

I wouldn't say that. A lot of these young recruits will try to prove themselves on special teams first. If we don't have a coach at that position who can recruit it could negatively impact LSU on NSD.

Robert April, Jr. is an American football coach. He has held various special teams coaching positions in the National Football League since 1991.

Who wouldn't want to play for him?

Maybe he will sign on full-time.

I think we have bigger problems than special teams players.

If these young players are not good enough to play at their primary position then they will play ST for whomever we hire.

the proposal of adding a 10th full-time assistant coach was universally hailed as a positive for college football. And with good reason. It’s 128 extra jobs for coaches, it’s extra help for the existing full-time coaches and it’s extra attention for players.

“There was unanimity around the table on the addition of a 10th assistant coach being allowed (in FBS),” NCAA Football Oversight Committee chairman Bob Bowlsby said in a statement. “We feel it is appropriate from a student-athlete welfare standpoint. The ratio of coaches to student-athlete is much higher in football than other sports, and this helps address that.

If we continue to treat Special teams as an afterthought, we will continue to get poor results.

Why do people make predictions, and then make negative predictions off of the results of the first prediction?

LSU WILL have a special teams coordinator. There will continue to be coaching changes and realignment of duties.

Some of these changes may not happen until after signing day, so be patient.

Ensminger is more involved recruiting than most think...4-5 years ago i was showing the N Webster head coach how everything worked on his new RV, the phone rang, i looked down and read "Coach Ensminger" he answered and they talked about some kid named Devin White for about 5 minutes...he got off the phone and told me who it was and that he had a kid that was only 8th ot 9th grade but one day everyone will know him, "hes a bad man"....Ensminger is a HUGE reason that kid is now at LSU

That's the real reason Les Miles is here today. He loves LSU so much he's coming back to coach our ST.
