Everyone will say 3rd and 17 but it really was. We have seen LSU flirt with opening things up before and being more aggressive. There would be a game that dictated they play that way but they always reverted back to old habits. When the game is on the line or it’s a tight situation you do what LSU does. Pound the rock and play defense. 3rd and 17 cemented that they were committed to real change.

when I watched every pre season film clip and couldn't find an instance of anyone dropping a pass or there being an errant throw. I posted as much on here.

3rd and long vs. Texas, Burrow under duress, slides to his left (tough to do for right handed QB's), completes the pass to Jefferson. Level of difficulty was high, made it look like he could do it again as many times as he wanted.

I realized things were different when we got the ball back late in the second quarter of the Texas game after Chaisson sacked Ehlinger. There was less than 1:30 left. It was ingrained in my head from years of timid offenses that LSU would run the clock out with the lead. Instead, Burrow diced up Texas for another TD.

When they started showing the GA Southern game and we were already up 7-0 with almost no time gone. I figured if the networks can't keep up something has changed.

Honestly listening to Rohan Davey talk about the team in August I could just tell that it was going to be different. All the guys that had access to the August practices, not just the media availability, really just sounded different when they talked about the team. They couldn’t talk specifics but the tone in their voice was just different.

Then after the Georgia Southern game I said I know it’s just Georgia Southern but they have played a lot of Georgia Southern’s over the past few years and didn’t look like that. The efficiency and the organization in that game was at another level for LSU football.

First half of the Bama game when I noticed Saban wasn’t even pissed. He had accepted LSU was better than his team.

JeauxJeaux’s pass to Jets against the shorthorns that’s ended the game.

In past that was a run, punt and pray for the defense to get a stop.

That moment!

This can’t be emphasized enough. There were three very critical series in my view, that defined the season. One was the series you’re referencing. The other was going for the TD following the Queen int against Bama. The third was the final first half drive against Clemson. All three gave LSU a massive mental edge going into the second half.

I think that’s what has to remain going into 2020. Yes it’s going to backfire on you at times. Hell it backfired on Bama that led to the afforementioned TD. Sure it’s a more solid philosophy with a Heisman QB. But I just don’t believe, given the current CFB landscape, that teams can play conservative. Offenses are just too far ahead of defenses right now.

Texas game confirmed what i expected, and showed that we were a different beast. But the turning moment was when Florida came in town, played us tough, took the lead, but we still scored 42 and won by 2 TDs.

Bama game, after the first half.

Texas game was great, but more in a "so this is what we could do if we have to" sense. It was against a Big 12 defense, didn't know if that was legit or not.

Cupcake games (including Vandy) were fun, but one of Curly's teams put 70 on a cupcake. Sometimes you beat up on a bad team because you can.

When we lit Bama up that first half, it was like "oh God, we really can do this against anyone".

In the Texas game we had a rough start for the first and third quarters, against a defense that was spotty at best and gassed at it's worst.

Florida was the game where I knew the offense could play from behind against a tough D and overcome it.

I was cautiously optimistic, but I kept expecting a clunker of an offensive game to come around. I figured it was bound to happen at some point especially since they kept touting each defense we were about to face — “what until they play (this defense)”. I was afraid of some low scoring offensive output loss at Bama. It wasn’t until that game ended that I knew without a doubt... and to do it on the road and in the style they did it.

And near the end, to answer every Bama scoring drive with one of our own. That was incredible stuff.

That’s one of only Bama losses that I can’t remember Saban not blowing a gasket. He didn’t even look mad, he just shrugged cause he knew they couldn’t do anything to stop us.

Damn, what a season.

For me, it was the ball Burrow threw to Jefferson in the Texas game for a TD before the half, back shoulder to perfection.

That was the start of it for me. Not so much because of the play, but because of the approach. LSU got the ball back in their own territory with roughly a minute to play in the the half and they were already up 13-7, on the road. LSU was also getting the ball to start the 2nd half. Old LSU would have just ran the ball and hoped maybe the back could bust one. But ultimately they would have been happy to go into the half with the lead. And you could argue that wouldn't have been a bad strategy.

Instead, the offense comes out firing downfield and covers 58 yards in 3 plays and 28 seconds to take a 20-7 lead at the half. That was the moment I said "now this is different." However, it wasn't until the Florida game until I was fully convinced. That was the first time LSU faced a good and talented SEC defense. The result, the offense has one of its most efficient games of the year
