Waters has certainly hit a freshman wall recently.

Reath is the only player playing well game in game out right now for the most part. Sampson looks checked out and he's one of the more talented guys left on this team.

Our 3 point shooting has been atrocious

Nothing. This is the same team from last year sans waters.

Were you really expecting a complete turnaround?

Still 1-2 years away imo

I'm not a fan of Wade, but I was impressed by the fact that he had the gumption to suspend the four players. I really wanted us to win, because I think a Coach that will do that deserves to win that game.

I figure Wade is using this season to try to sort things out. I didn't like the Wade hype because, until he gets his team in and has a full season with legitimate results, any talk of "he's the greatest" is just talk. I'm not going to punish him because of this season, nor am I going to anoint him as the greatest because of all the talk.

I'm sure the transition process is difficult for a coach.

I don't ever bash players (except Simmons AFTER he went to the NBA).

I think this team feeds off the energy of Waters. Teams have really zoned in on him. Play great defense against Waters and you deplete the teams energy. I’m not saying Waters hasn’t been doing all he can do. He’s the only real scoring threat we have. If Reath, Mays or Sampson start scoring it opens things up a bit.

You're getting downvoted because asking any legitimate question that can be perceived as "negative" is not allowed.

It was very unlikely LSU was going to be able to win at AU and UT. By most (if not all) metrics those are the two best teams in the league and LSU was playing them on the road. But they were just coming off an impressive win vs. A&M (an A&M team with their full squad).

They were shell shocked at AU by Auburn's start. However, LSU did their part to aid in that by simply not guarding anyone at the 3 point line and playing will marginal effort on defense. AU plays fast and they shoot a ton of 3's. For LSU to seemingly not be ready to match that intensity was dishearting.

Last night they played a complete opposite opponent. One that wants to grind you down on defense. Yes, Wade was down 2 players (the other two weren't in the rotation even when they were on the team). Because of it he went to a zone defense to try to steal some minutes and energy for the second half. But LSU was just dead. They had a few burst here and there, but overall, not much. The zone was awful because they didn't close out hard to anyone. All it took was a few passes for UT to get LSU out of position and for UT to get a wide open look. LSU never matched the intensity. While defense has been a struggle most of the year, they still were playing with decent effort. That's why even in the SEC losses they weren't getting blown out. The last two times out look more like last season where the team just quit and went through the motions. Even Wade looked disheartened last night.

Maybe the grind has worn them down. Maybe they are just in their worst shooting slump of the season (absent Reath). Maybe AU and UT are just THAT good. But you at least want to see some fight, right? Waters looks disengaged and as a team they are just getting out-fought in every aspect. This is a team that has played and beat good teams this season. So while losing to two of the best teams in the league is not surprising, looking like you don't even belong on the same court is.

I saw the energy, not sure how we watched the same game and came up 180-degrees apart on that, but having watched Johnny's teams the last few years I can definitely see an much higher energy and effort level this year. We actually created several turnovers through hustle and effort in trimming the lead the first half of the second half.

However, as John Wooden would say, don't confuse activity with achievement.

We have two bigs who I like and are easy to pull for but neither are tough or physical, they are soft and have trouble just blocking out on free throws and to make it worse they do not have the lateral movement to execute ball screen defense effectively and teams know this and run them off high ball screens as much as they can.

and all that trickles down.

If Waters plays bad we lose and if he plays well we win. That's proven to be the formula in SEC play. And teams do all they can to take him out and play bad. He's had one good game the last 5....and we won that one.

Hate these kinds of comments. Equate poor results with lack of effort. They played better teams on the road where momentum is more easily generated for the home team. Its along season and every team experiences these kinds of lulls. Those seven players gave tremendous effort last night, battled back into the game after large deficits but just got beat by a deeper team who shot very well.

Auburn & Tenn are scrappy and tough especially at home. We have a pretty young team trying to go on the road to play ranked teams. They are ranked for a reason. It doesn't help when your guards are not scoring at all, or playing good defense. Our 3-point shooting has been ice cold. Looks like teams are starting to game plan for Waters and putting longer bodies on him and helping/hedging a bunch on the perimeter.

JJones needs to get his fingerprints off this program and let Will Wade coach. I'm tired of him having a say in what goes on and its restricting Wades ability to coach.

Played on the road against the two best teams in the SEC right as we're hitting a rough patch in terms of our play and suspended two of our most important bench guys. Anyone who knows anything about the program knew this team would have its ups and downs. They were never going to be a tournament team but I still don't think we end up in the cellar either.

In general LSU has played hard. Last night wasn't one of those games. Where intensity really manifests itself is on defense and 50/50 balls. That said, Tennessee beat LSU to many of the 50/50 balls (though not nearly as much as Auburn did) and scorched LSU on offense with countless open looks. LSU looked a step slow and hesitant all night. They didn't close out hard to any of the shooters. Tenn. shot 54% overall and 48% from three. That doesn't happen when guys are harassing shooters. Part of that was UT executed well when LSU tried to play zone. But, it only took a couple of passes to get LSU completely out of sorts and someone was always hesitant or lacking to recover. Even the announcers noted LSU looked a step slow.

Compare that with UT players who were constantly in the faces of LSU players when the Tigers were on offense. There was passion from the guys in orange. There wasn't much from the guys in purple.

Right now Onwassar and Reath are the only guys really showing fight. Others kind of seem to be going through the motions. Maybe the most glaring example of that happened at Auburn. On an LSU break Waters threw a cross-court pass that was intercepted by AU. After doing so he stopped, hung his head, and turned to slowly jog back on defense. In the process, the Auburn players blew by him for an easy dunk.

Maybe the grind has gotten to them. But the body language looks like the team is beat down. Even Wade wasn't his usual emotional self last night.

Shows the value of a good point guard to control what's happening on the floor, offensively and defensively; the best I saw at LSU to do that was Ethan Martin; Waters needs more experience, and the kid coming in from Scotlandville, J. Scott, will be a big plus

Disagree. Those seven kids played their hearts out last night, but they just did not have the bodies to keep up for 40 minutes. There were 8 or 10 open looks that just did not go down for them., but Tennessee rarely missed those shots. Had a few more fallen the score could have been more respectable.

Its tough on the road against a fairly talented team in year 4 of the coaching regime. This team was cobbled together over the summer and is still a work in progress. Coming home and getting a couple players back will do wonders for this team.

I wanted a win or a better game but I am proud of what this team has accomplished throughout the year in laying a foundation.

To me energy/effort and intensity are two different things. I fink intensity to be mental and the former physical.

Everything is going wrong lately. The losses are weighing on Wade causing him to make some mistakes, we aren’t shooting it well and were short handed Wednesday. Wade is so hell bent on us becoming a good defensive team he’s lost what we do well which is score the ball. When we have played our best we are pushing the tempo and scoring. We aren’t a half court team and we aren’t a defensive team. It seems like he’s pressing too much and we have moved toward the wrong direction for this team. I don’t think we are overly talented but we do have scorers and that’s the area of the game getting lost which is why we are getting blown out. After the SFA game Wade said scoring will not be a problem for us and with the rotation he was using it wouldn’t be but he’s tried to make defensive adjustments that have sacrificed our offensive output. We aren’t going to stop good team but we can outscore some if he resets and gets back to what we do well.
