I'll never understand why this board is so infatuated with Chris Reid.

Not having Walker hurts.

Not having Storz and Labas pitch during the non conference hurts more.

Not having Sanders get outs during the midweek is devastating.

Honestly, from what I've seen we're going to have some struggles on the mound this year. Granted our competition thus far this year is better than most (I'd say we're somewhere in the ballpark of SEC competition right now), we've been giving up waaay too many runs. I think Gilbert will come around to be at least decent if not good, and hopefully Hess will play more like he did on Friday, but even still I think we might struggle. All pitchers struggle from time to time and none of our pitchers have looked to be the exception to that rule. The biggest problem with Sunday is that even if you want to go wholestaff, that takes away arms or at least innings from Friday/Saturday. I don't see us having any of our starters going deep into games so we're going to need a small stockpile of relief arms. Hopefully Storz or Labas can come in later in the season and give us a boost but relying on that now seems folly. Right now Vietmeir or Peterson seem like the best Sunday candidates (though with shorter leashes once we get into SEC play). I could see Beck maybe getting a chance too. Technically Bain has been a Sunday guy too, but I doubt we see that again. The good news is that we're not the only team that's going to be searching for reliable starters so all isn't lost. Really, we just gotta hope that Hess and Gilbert can lock down Friday and Saturday. If they can do that, we'll still win a lot of games.

He’s a great teammate. So the fans really like him.

They play Slaughter because of potential and he can go yard any moment. At some point his struggles can be a bit much and Reid should field better. I’d play Slaughter over him atm still.

It will be interesting as we get guys healthy to see the lineup.

Basically all of this. We're replacing all 3 weekend starters with one being unplanned. It's tough. Couple that with two potentially good arms out for now and it's even tougher.

I did forget about colonel Sanders. Hopefully he can pull it together. Another possibility for a Sunday starter.

Sanders is the most important arm on this staff. If he's on LSU has a new weekend starter OR dominant reliever that would change the way we look at the rotation.

It's all mental with him right now and it's hard to watch because LSU could really use his arm. He doesn't belong in the midweek role and if he hangs around there for too long it's going to be a disappointment.

1. Keep the pitching rotation like it already is...for this weekend. We need Labas to get a shot and then Storz. Beck needs to stay in relief.

2. I really like it that Chris Reid is on our team...as a sub. Keep Jake at 3rd until Smith comes back and then decide who stays in, Jake or Hunter.

Chris Reid has a career OBP of .400 over 200 ABs & you sitting here acting like he is wet delatte.

kind of reminds me of Kramer Robertson when he hit like .200 over his first few years but still had the OBP skill despite poor averages. Even then he was not nearly as successful getting on base as Reid has been thru 2 seasons. Guys with that pitch recognition skill tend to end up being useful players. Their BA's catch up to their OBP more times than not.

Slaughter is obviously more talented and shouldnt lose his job just yet but Reid seeing ABs is not a bad thing.

Those stats are misleading given the fact that Reid was never given regular playing time last year

I'm fine with that. Peterson needs to be out and I think Gilbert needs to be moved to Saturday. Both have been bad so far

His dad Scott was the same way. I spoke with a former SEC ump who worked some of his games back in the day. He said without a doubt, that was the best slider he'd ever seen. The problem was he had it 1 out of every 10 times. If AD can get him under control, he's a miracle worker.

If you could read good, you'd notice that the OP talks about Slaughter.

When you have to defend starting one guy over another, previous stats and experience come into play.

Everyone's single, solitary argument for Reid is his average/obp from 2 years ago. He's not faster. He's bad at fielding. He only hits singles (when he does hit) and his average his freshman year was from lots of garbage-time hits. Give me an hour or so and I'll get those stats together... He's not the answer for the future and if we have to put in the field, 3B would be the last place anyone should want him. At this point we are talking about holding a spot until Smith returns with Hal maintaining his production. I'd rather fill those weeks with someone who has potential and someone we could actually rely on (both in the field and at the plate).
