Formerly Jalen Courtney

quote:

LSU head coach Matt McMahon announced on Thursday that former Tiger basketball player Jalen Courtney-Williams is joining the LSU men’s basketball coaching staff as assistant coach.

Courtney-Williams joins the Tiger staff after three years as a member of the coaching staff at Creighton. He had previously served at McNeese and Mississippi State.

Creighton advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all three years with Courtney-Williams on the staff, advancing to the Sweet 16 this past season with 25 wins. Creighton defeated Akron and Oregon in double overtime in postseason play before losing to No. 6 Tennessee. The Bluejays won 24 games and advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals in 2023 before winning three games against NC State, No. 11 and Princeton in the NCAA Tournament before falling in the Elite 8 to San Diego State.

In his first season for Cortney-Williams at Creighton (2021-22), the Bluejays won 23 games. Advanced to the BIG EAST championship game and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jalen Courtney-Williams and his family back to LSU,” said Coach McMahon. “He is a star in the profession with an elite ability to build relationships, recruit high level players, teach the game, and impact winning. He was a part of tremendous success in his time at Creighton as the defensive coordinator and with his work in player development. He has a passion for LSU and we are looking forward to the new energy and ideas he will bring to our program.”

Courtney-Williams played in 61 games at LSU in three seasons (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13) before transferring to Morehead State where after sitting out a transfer season in 2013-14, he played for MSU in the 2014-15 season.

I was very glad to hear about this. I think this more than makes up for Ronnie Hamilton leaving.

Two areas that have been lacking under MM. Hopefully with the new hire we see improvement in these areas.

Is this one of those new age take your wife's name thing or a Maurice Drew becoming Maurice Jones-Drew thing?

MM turned Trae Hannibal into a legit SEC point guard. If that ain't development, I don't know what is.

He was basically the same player both seasons IMO. He was always a solid player. Frankly, I think a lot of people on TD were just too dumb to see his ability as a PG, imo. Plus, he played a lot of 2 guard his first year at LSU.

This is not meant to sound racist, but it might come off sounding racist...

but in the black community, over 75% of children are born to single or unwed mothers and take their mother's name at birth. You see this hyphenated name situation sometimes when the father becomes a big part of their life later on. Another situation is the father becomes a big part of their life or has been a big part of their life then passes away and the child honors them in this way.

ETA:

Looked it up, Maurice Jones-Drew not raised by his parents, so he took his grandfather's last name when he passed away.

Jalen Courtney's parents were not together, but was given his father's name of "Courtney" at birth. He has since changed to a hyphen to honor his mother, whose last name is "Williams".

Doesn't have anything to do with race

Also, people often take Stepdad's name, especially if he adopts them

LSU hires new basketball assistant.

So let's discuss... black community hyphenated name situation.

TD never ceases to amaze me.

Random fact but in Spanish speaking countries everyone technically has a double last name on their birth certificate

He always had the potential but I found he had way too many turnovers last season and even early this season. Split between losing the handle on the dribble or bad passes. It seemed like he found a groove when Cook caught the stupid bug. His game definitely elevated the last half of the season.

I agree, but let's not forget that McMahon was not playing Trae only as a PG his first season. He spent a lot of time at SG, and I even remember a game where he went in at PF for the rebounding...

Despite this he still put up similar numbers both years. I think Trae has always been a solid player. I do think he improved some coming into his last season, but it's a stretch to say MM TURNED him into a legit SEC PG. My stance on him is that he always could be a PG in the SEC. I won't forget how much ridicule I received for defending Hannibal at the start of this past season. It's hard to develop as a PG when you aren't the one running the offense and getting reps at PG (as we saw in year 1 and in the first half of year 2)

I’m curious as to who MM hasn't developed properly?

There’s only a few he’s even had a chance to develop with such a high roster turn over..

Gotta love the mcmen, when McMahon doesn’t play a player or plays him out of position then out of desperation finally throws the guy out there and he does well they’re now calling it “development”.

Always interesting to see the coaching connections. Now LSU has one assistant who played under Johnson and Jones. Another (Casey Long) was an assistant coach under Wade at two stops, Chattanooga and VCU
