The SEC as a whole has gotten more competitive. He came in and brought half his team with him. That shows that the players liked him. He had a total rebuild with possible recruiting violations hovering over the program. He put a team on the floor that everyone hoped could compete. Against weaker teams, they played well. The SEC is a different animal. I hope they promised him a commitment of time to build a team under these circumstances. Some fans know zero about what it takes to win on this level. With the handicaps he dealt with, he did as well as could be expected. This is going to be painful for another year or so. But it is not the coach.

Meh. I don't really care enough about BB to get all up in arms about it either way, but he looks like a bad fit at LSU. Losing begets losing.

Obviously, I'm not for firing him now, but little to no improvement next season and he should definitely get shown the door.

BB ain't football. It doesn't take years to turn around - hell the kids are barely there a year or two.

IF Chris Beard is available, and wants this job, you sure as hell can remove him after a year.

Woody gave him a 20 year guaranteed contract. I hope that’s enough time!

Dead last in the SEC. Getting run out of the gym by Ole Miss and USCe. Those were definitely the expectations.

It takes a good coach to win at this level, so you are one of the fans that know zero about what it takes to win on this level.

In his first year with the interim tag removed, he lost LSU's Homecoming game to Troy.

But he did not lose every SEC game except two.

I don't think we have any other choice, because if Woody could have convinced someone better to take it on given our unknown future, he would have done it. There's no microwave solution for us. Grin it (or not) and bear it.

This thread is two months too late. Two months ago I would have agreed. But losing damn near every game (even against very beatable teams) is unacceptable. Like everyone else has said though, LSU is stuck with him. Should have NEVER signed him to the contract they signed him to. If he chose to decline the offer, so be it. We obviously would have been better off without him anyway.

But frick the mindset "give the guy a chance". He's way past that now.

The LSU job will not be highly-sought until (1) the NCAA finishes crapping on us and the light at the end of the tunnel is visible and (2) the NIL money is in place for men's basketball. McMahon will have that long to substantially improve.

If this was 10 years ago I would agree, give him a few years to turn the program around. Now with NIL and the portal, no reason to give a coach years to turn a program around. If McMahon isn’t competitive in the SEC next year, he’s gone imo. By competitive, I’m saying just outside of .500 with a chance at the dance if things fall your way.

The Macolytes are the weirdest group of fans ever on this board. Unable to acknowledge even the most obvious truths, repeating double standards, conflicting statements and debunked narratives like religious chants.

agreed - the contract is WAY too long. I realize the program had a bit of a cloud hanging over it, but 7 years is absurd.

And Woody is the same guy who gave Jimbo the horrible 10-year guaranteed contract at A&M.

At least Jimbo had skins on the wall. McMahon was hired as a favor to a friend and had a very pedestrian resume for a Murray State coach. Of their last 6 coaches he’s 4th in winning percentage and had bad records in 3 of 5 seasons without Ja Morant including a 13-13 record just a couple of years ago. There’s no justifying his contract, it’s a bad hire from every aspect.

I don't necessarily buy this. "Better" is relative. And naming someone "better" than McMahon is easier through the prism of hindsight. LSU was never poaching a big name coach from an established power conf. program like they did in football and baseball for the simple reason the basketball program doesn't have the cache those two programs have in their respective sports. There was also no HOF coach who just happens to be be from Louisiana out in the marketplace like there was with Mulkey. LSU was very likely always getting a mid-major HC. All one has to do is look at the rest of the SEC coaching hires this season to see that was the case. Four others hired coaches from mid-major schools. Georgia hired the guy Florida wanted to get rid of). Without the benefit of hindsight you could make a strong argument McMahon had one of the better resumes among mid-major options. McMahon wasn't viewed as someone like John Brady who really was just the only guy who would take the job with ACTUAL significant sanctions levied upon the program (not just the irrational fear of such). Most who follow the sport felt it was a solid hire.

The reality is he hasn't been good and there is little optimism for the future. So in hindsight "yes", LSU possibly could have hired someone better. But that someone would have very likely come from the mid-major ranks. Coaching searches and job hires are never 100% certainties. LSU is not going to be the only school from this cycle that "missed" on the hire. But, the key is recognizing it quickly and moving on if necessary.

There actually is. Chris Beard. The hire would come with a lot of initial negative PR. Therefore, I don't think LSU considers it. But he would have the program winning big quickly.

The dude sucks as a basketball coach period.. he had no answer once the SEC teams figured him out which wasn’t hard to do..his gameplan was the same the entire rest of the season.. the SEC conference was way more competitive than he thought and even as of last game he still hasn’t figured it out..he’s just rolling with the punches being every other teams piñata..and next year doesn’t look any better…
