We don't have the Jimmy's and the Joe's in the defensive backfield.

At safety we have an undersized transfer from Marshall, a kid processed from Georgia. A corner from Southeastern and freshmen.
Those are faaarrr cries from Mathieu, Peterson etc.
Of course blame falls really hard on House. But they are working with scraps. That is why Brian said in the post game that nobody else is coming through the door and we have to work with who we got. They don't say that unless they know the cupboard is bare bare.

Don't forget the processed kid from UGA had his scholorship pulled by O a few days before signing day. Even he knew...
Burns and Sam would be good rotational pieces but Burns lacks the speed to be an SEC player and not sure Sam can read based on how many missed assignments he has per game.

There's no excuse for the cupboard to be bare in 2023. End of story.
And even with the lack of talent, we are still playing much, much, worse than our talent.

This is glaring and I think teams are attacking it. He plays well at the line of scrimmage but he's Roman Harper in the pass game.

House needs to change his scheme to fit the players a little bit better.
The soft zone just allows teams to gain 7-8 yards with ease, then we are not a good tackling team so add 10 yards to that. Pretty frustrating.
Good news is LSU is bringing in a good bit DB prospects next season to add to the younger guys they still have.

I don't agree with this.
This is what are talent level is. Don't let it blind you cause they have gold helmets on.

I don't disagree. Most of the LSU defenses we all loved had guys that were locking people down at corner.
We just don't have the dudes to do this either. Harris is the only guy who has this ability, but he's also young and inexperienced. I wish we could get back to it, but I don't think this would be a solution this year because we don't have the players to do it.
They may have to try more of it though, because clearly playing mostly zone isn't working either.

I don’t care whose playing on the corners. If lsu can’t figure out how to put pressure on the qb, every game we play will be a shootout

Our defensive players are still better recruits than ole miss there’s no excuse

You also have to be able to cover for a few seconds to give the pass rush time. Playing a soft zone, and allowing the QB to get the ball out in 3 steps for 5-7 yards isn't allowing time to put pressure. Then add on top of that, we aren't tackling worth a shite either, and those 5-7 yards turns into 20.
I think our biggest issue isn't the front 7. I don't even necessarily think it's coaching, although House needs to do something different. It's simply what the OP said, we don't have the guys at DB to make anything happen.

We don't have the talent to be a dominant defense. But we definitely have enough talent to have beaten Ole Miss on Saturday.
That loss was 100% on the coaches.

Our DBs consist of:
1- Southeastern player
2 - Syracuse player
3- McNeese/marshall player
4 - someone who couldn't hack it at Georgia
5 - a freshman who had tons of issues at aTm, and LSU early on
6 - young kids
I don't think it's as simple as saying, the guys we put on the field are just better than Ole Miss. Kiffin is one of the best offensive coaches in the nation. He's going to take advantage of what we don't have.

Yes, this is my point. We just don't have the talent.

We don't have the talent for what? To not give up over 700 yards? To get more than 3 stops against Ole Miss?
Tulane got 5 stops against them. Mercer got TWO! Georgia Tech got 3 stops. Are you saying we have less talent on defense than Tulane and are on par with Georgia Tech and Mercer?
This defense was historically bad on Saturday night. We definitely have enough talent to not be historically bad. Guys are confused, always out of position, and are basically lost out there. I can't believe people watch these games and see all the blown assignments and busted coverages and think this is a talent issue. It doesn't take some supreme level of talent to be within 5 yards of a receiver running a crossing route on 3rd and long.

The continued confusion and blown and constant blown assignments is the real issue. There is talent to be an average to below-average SEC defense that was all that was needed to beat Ole Miss. This feels like a replay of 2020.

the scheme is making it worse
Posted on 10/2/23 at 9:43 am to fastlane
We don't even have the x's and o's. To come out in soft vision between the 25's and then to get burnt all night in the redzone with bubble screens or tosses. I can live with 50/50 balls where Ole Miss receivers just make a play, but I can't live with House getting schemed to death in the gray and redzones all goddamn night.

These are excuses you make when you have a mediocre defense. When you're statistically one of the worst in the country, that's coaching.
Watch Duke play defense. How many of those guys do you think had an opportunity to play at LSU?
