Shaq is without question a top 10 player in NBA history. Pettit isn’t

We should be discussing second best because Shaq was by far the best.....second best of his college career because Laettner was truly superior.

As the second best it was probably Bob Pettit

Popularity and recency bias (and other bias’ I won’t get into) created by TV coverage doesn’t mean he was a better pro. The numbers don’t lie. Ask people who were players who Petit was 50 years or more later and they knew he was the first person who reached 20000 points and all those boards.
He won more league MVP titles than Shaq
Was more scoring titles than Shaq
More first team all NBA than Shaq - 10
Same ROTY
And was once a second team
MVP of the All Star game more than Shaq
More rebounding titles

They didn’t have an all defensive team then.

G 792 PTS 26.4 TRB 16.2 AST 3.0

Player 2
SUMMARY
Career
G 1207 PTS 23.7 TRB 10.9 AST 2.5

He is one of four players who was named to all four NBA anniversary teams and one of only two living members as of 2023 with Bob Cousy. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest power forwards of all time.[3][4]

As a mark of true consistency, Pettit played in 11 straight All Star Games, was named All Star Game MVP more times than any player in history, and guided the Hawks to the 1958 NBA championship. When Pettit retired in 1965, he was the league's highest scorer (20,880) and second highest rebounder (12,849).
If there wasn’t a team called the Celtics, he wins 5 titles. He took a terrible team and won the title by himself with 50 in the final game.

They are still writing about him in 2023 but but but he wasn’t great. Freaking people like you do not understand what great truly looks like including the BEST 4 to ever play. Unlike Shaq, he quit after 11 seasons with his full health.

You’re blaming media for overrating Shaq then citing media as proof Pettit was better. Kind of hypocritical no? The fact is Shaq was the better player, the entire league changed multiple times based on slowing Shaq down and still couldn’t stop his dominance. You can make an argument that MJ, Wilt and Shaq were the 3 most unstoppable players to ever play.

I was responding to whoever said Brandon was on the team with CJ, Shaq, Roberts and Vernel.

I’m not blaming the media. I’m saying most don’t know who he was and there are people in the know who did not forget. Russell only mentioned him once in a quip because he was white and from the south and talked with that drawl. That was a black-white thing and Russell was all about that when a player at his position was his equal.

Then there is the whole thing about the Hawks. They were a terrible franchise until him. He didn’t need 2 other all time greats to win a title. He was great. One could say Kobe was better than Shaq - lots of people do in fact - and Dwayne Wade who is a top 15 of all time.

Russell needed Cousey an all time great.
I mean you have to have context. White tall guy that was great in the 50’s and 60’s and didn’t play with Wilt or Russell.

Ed Macaulay, Lenny Wilkins, Zelmo Beatty, Clyde Lovelette, Richie Guerin and Cliff Hagan were all Hall of Famers and all Pettit teammates in St. Louis.
