After Kareem came in and worked with him, I’d say ‘yes’

Prior, he hadn’t jumped Stanley or even Geert.

By a mile

He was the best center by a mile, but the OP threw in that “all around”. Shaq could not shoot and he could not shoot free throws, so I would not call him a great “all around” center. That would be Bob Petite.

Dude was like a cheat code in the paint. Best center I ever saw play the game. His size and speed were unbelievable. He could run with tge guards on a fast beak no problem.

He is one of a handful of NBA players to score 60+ points in a game without any of those points coming behind the 3 pt line.

Shaq was the greatest center.

Chris Jackson was the greatest/most exciting/most talented college basketball player that I’ve seen play college ball in my 46 years on this earth.

Pistol Pete was before my time, but he was a level or three more exciting that Chris Jackson, which is hard for me to imagine because Chris rocked the house. Had people camping out outside on the pmac ramps the night before our regular season games just to get in the building to watch the dude play.

I’m pretty certain that our most exciting times as LSU Mens bball fans are behind us. We had an overabundance of talent come through LSU in mens basketball from Pistol Pete thru Chris Jackson and Shaq. Set the bar too damn high and spoiled the fans like me when we were still young kids.

Geert Hammink was the best.

JK - Shaq, and it’s not even close. I just like saying Geert Hammink

The OP asked who was the best all around center. Shaq would get the nod on D, but Petit was more versatile on O.

If you’re too young to have seen him at LSU go watch his games here on YouTube, you won’t be disappointed. When he was winning titles in LA he was 340-360lbs, at LSU he was between 286 and 294lbs, he could run and move like nobody else anywhere near his size. It was truly amazing to witness.

I once saw him move off his guy from one side of the basket, go under the basket, and block a shot on the other side of the basket. He moved like a cat at LSU.

One game back in the day, Rick Mattix took a made free throw from the other team after 1 bounce, stepped out of bounce with ball, wheeled and threw the ball 3rd row into the stands!!!

Yes. Hall of famer. One of a kind. 'Nuf said. Who are the all time guards and forwards?

Mine would be Pistol Pete, Chris Jackson, Rudy Macklin, and Bob Pettit.

Petit was listed as a forward at LSU, But Petit did average more points and more rebounds and was a much better free throw shooter than Shaq at LSU.

But I never saw Petit play, I saw Shaq. No one in my lifetime has been as good at center.
