Vandy has 25 scholarship players...they are able to give out need-based scholarships.

That is, if the player's family has an annual income level below a certain level (say, $100,000), they can give that player a full ride that doesn't count against the 11.7 athletic schollies that the NCAA allows for baseball. Rice is about to start this same thing. Stanford has been doing it. It is an advantage for private schools with deep pockets. So, Vandy's coach should get some credit for coaching his team to a title, but he has a recruiting advantage that most schools don't have.

For some reason people just flat out don't want to listen to and/or understand this at all. Honestly, they should have more titles.

So LSU doesn't give out need-based scholarships? I find that hard to believe.

It is advantage of minor NCAA sports. LSU needs to take advantage like Vanderbilt.

LSU has been doing it for years. Not to mention as the football and basketball news continues to leak pay guys directly to come. Sort of ironic chicken is whining about this.

Think about it in terms of Catholic schools vs public schools in high school. One has an option to attract players to their schools while the others don't have the option at all.

Believe me, what your family can pay =\= what your family is expected to pay.

They aren’t giving f every kid’s a full ride without twisting some numbers

Also it would be way easier to abuse this loophole in football and basketball.

You're talking impermissible benefits. Chicken is talking scholarships.

The number of scholarships per player is much higher in both football and basketball which is why it's not as big of an advantage in those sports.

It’s a big factor in basketball, and having an unlimited # of scholarships would definitely help a football team trying to find diamonds in the rough.

Most of their baseball players are probably coming middle class families who would be expected to make some contribution.

Giving them a full ride would be basically just an athletic scholarship.

You’re a good poster who normally makes good posts. This was not one of them. Private and public high schools offer the same thing - free tuition. Vandy also offers that. LSU cannot. LSU can only offer 11.whatever scholarships. Vandy can offer 1 billion if they want.

They don’t have to twist numbers, these need based scholarships are available to all students that’s why they are allowed to do it.

LSU baseball uses TOPS in the same way.

Exactly. LSU still has a big leg up on most schools with TOPS

what would prevent LSU from giving all of the baseball players a TOPS scholarship (outside of the 11.7 it already can use)? I am not completely aware of how TOPS works or how it can be awarded...is it just for Louisiana kids?

Well you have to be from Louisiana to qualify & have maintained a 2.5 HS gpa & scored a 20 on the ACT. There are other stipulations that determine how much you exactly get, but if I remember right it adds about 4-5 spots to that 11.7

I don’t think you get exactly the same type of freedom as Vandy, but it gives LSU an advantage over most SEC schools.

Definitely not even close to the same advantage if TOPS is Louisiana only
