You'd be surprised at the number of well-to-do and educated African Americans who are from Baton Rouge and went to Southern or other universities that aren't fond of LSU and view the school as a racist institution.

While this does seem to be something that really is fricking nuts; I would've said the same thing about removing statues from New Orleans (a city that thrives on history and culture) that been up longer than any human has been alive. 
Some perspective: Lee statue was 133 years old, LSU's tiger is only 122.
Do I think this will go anywhere? No. But the mere fact that it is being pushed by a group of students does make a statement.

If I went up to an African American in my office and asked him/her to give me a coconut, I would be fired before the echo of my voice subsided.
But, thousands of people do this and fight over them on the streets of New Orleans every year.
