What exactly happened
AJ is a gymnast on UCLA gymnastics team singing popular rap song with lyrics that has n-word. Two other gymnasts(who are both white) over hear this and confront AJ, saying she cant sing that and needs to apologize. AJ thinks she does nothing wrong and feels like there is no need for apology. This pisses off these gymnasts that over heard her and they report it to the coaching staff and other gymnast on the team. Since then a lot of therapy and meetings was done with the UCLA gymnastics team to address the issue. During this time also there was apparently a lot of bullying of AJ which reached a tipping point when the leader of the team said she need to be suspended for two meets and still needs to apologize. AJ says frick that and transfers. UCLA gymnastics still having problems.
I could be wrong but that is everything I have gathered from reading around.

Some new girl on their team uses the N word and doesn't apologize right away, but you think they should just stay quiet unless they are actively involved in solving inner city crime? JFC. If someone calls your kids a dumb cracker do you tell them not to get upset?
no, they're saying that expending all the righteous indignation over a word in a song might be better spent on trying to address tangible problems, like actual people being actually harmed/killed by out-of-control violent crime in Chicago, and other places.
ETA: and I think the UCLA women wanting her suspended, the coach fired, and possibly bullying the girl have taken it way too far and are huge drama queens. But saying a young woman can't get upset is just dumb. Like what would you want a 20 year gymnast to do to solve black on black crime anyway?

Stop glorifying rap culture for one.

If Kendrick and Killer Mike didn't want my old honkie.@ss singing those words then they wouldn't be in the lyrics. And they'd agree.
Can Elvis sing 'In the Ghetto', or is it only culturally appropriate if Stevie Wonder sings 'Just Enough for the City' ? Or is it verboten altogether for all?

Absolutely. The world would be a much better place of progressives learned to stop being such pussies.

This sort of thing is a good reason for white people to never listen to rap music. If you don't listen to it, you won't sing it. If you don't sing it, you won't sing it "offensively".

I've taught my kids not to view others through a racial lens, and not to view themselves racially either. They go to a majority-minority high school and have friends across the spectrum. No issue at all that I've heard of.
They're each a person - an individual - not defined as a member of an identity group, whether that's race, religion, etc.
They're an individual. An American individual.

Is it racist to cut and paste the lyrics to a rap song? Will I automatically be accused of being in the clan?
I've got a confession. NWA was my favorite thing to listen to during my junior year and I sang along many times. I still do not hate minorities...in fact I hate leftist white people much more than any minority I can think of.
lyrics
Is this a racist website because of the lyrics including the n-word?

No, you really don't. You advocate the behavior of those wanting her suspended daily.
Funny how you and TBoy come in this thread knighting when the reality is you promote this.

I don't think many here are being objective. I think there are too many dealing with the fatigue from the "woke" crowd. In a sense, they just side with anyone or anything in conflict of "being woke".
First, whether it was singing lyrics or or the use of the N-word in a casual sentence, if someone communicates that it offends them, obviously you refrain from using that language around them. That's what mature folks do. Also, I don't know of any workplace environments that would tolerate that behavior, it may not be her workplace but she owes it to the University to conduct herself in a certain manner.
The only reason this is even a story is that (if most did the smallest amount of research) UCLA is considered among the NCAA gymnastics community as sort of a "safe space" for minorities. They've been featured in Glamour and have had various articles written about how diverse they are. Even some minority parents of current and former gymnasts were a little bit shocked to hear about this at UCLA.
I think the issue has been blown out of proportion. This should've been handled by UCLA's administrative department and NEVER should've been a story. Everyone should be held to the same standard, nobody should be using language that could be considered racist. White, black, Asian, etc. period!
I highly doubt she would "sing those lyrics" in front of the administrators or in front of a competition committee, why....because she knows it to be inappropriate language to use publicly. I say publicly because behind close doors, you're never going to stop people from acting/talking how they want to.
Long story short...I don't think she's racist if she was singing a song and used the N-word in doing so. I do believe she's immature for her age if she doesn't even understand why she should've refrained from using that type of language when confronted by teammates. Seems like everybody involved in this situation is at fault one way or another.

Lol only a true POS would think not saying the N-word was some sort of submissive act as opposed to displaying human decency
That’s this fricking site. Not even a bit shocked how this thread on this site went.
Reading some articles it sounds like this girl went around saying shite cause she did it where she was from. She got called out. Talked about hurting herself. Played the victim. Made up some stories about how she didn’t do anything wrong.
And now all the racists on this site come together to give their ignorant opinions and talk about wokeness and cancel culture.
