You can say the same about a lot of basketball and football players
its true many of the great male ballers were successful because of freak size. that's why many of the NBA/NFL players were mentioned were not big guys. Iverson, ja morant, Michael vick. these are normal sized guys with incredible talent.
so I agree, a person like Shaq is a freak because he is huge. if he were 6'2 he would have been terrible at basketball. cant shoot or handle the ball. I would argue the same thing is true to some extent of these lil gymnast girls. they are like 5'3 98 pounds, which allows them to do things regular sized people, who may be superior athletes, cannot.
again I think if you took a person like Allen Iverson, and put him in soccer or golf at age 5, he would be spectacular. I don't think that's true of those gymnasts girls.

I just thought about it. I would say Chris Jackson at LSU was most athletic athlete I’ve ever seen. Could hardly believe my eyes sometimes.

I think the point he’s making is that the guys he mentioned would be much better than them at most other athletic feats if they had an overall competition.
That is a different argument. Most male athletes have physical advantages which is why its loudicrous to allow trans athletes to compete with females. The biggest reason gymnasts are the best athletes is that their athleticism is only half the equation as they must land in a given form at a stipulated spot. A perfect pass or a 50-50 ball completions counts the same in football, a perfect throw to first or one the first baseman has to scoop is still an out if it beats the runner. Gymnassts have no such margin for error.

You’re still arguing a different point. They are incredible at what they do and it is one of the most impressive things in the world. That doesn’t make them the best athletes in the world

Marlon Taylor was fun to watch.

I can help you understand. yunno how the Chinese always get in trouble for having tiny 14 year old children in the Olympics? the reason they do this is the children are tiny. and the 27 year old woman cannot compete with them. so do you see how the advantage is about size. the 27 year old former gymnast is still athletic, but she cannot compete. because its not just about being a great athlete.
millions of amazingly athletic people are aged and sized out of gymnastics, so the pool of talent is very small. like jockeys. if jockeys could be any size, the talent level would be higher.
the best athletes are the ones that dominate sports where their size is not the dominant factor. again, like Iverson, or Kyler Murray, or mookie Betts. Betts is incredible. he bowls 300s all the time because his hand/eye talent is world class. a Chinese acrobat that is 88 pounds is not a superior athlete.

Same argument applies to other sports. A Trindon Holliday is the rare exception in football because he has a unique skill set. Gymnastas also have rare skillsets, but not every pixie sized girl or young woman can do the things gymnasts do. But, the things gymnasts do require athleticism, grace and an awareness of body and space. A tall basketball player can leap and dunk and he gets two points no matter how graceful or awkwardly he lands. Gymnasts must land within very narrow parameters and they get judged by their form when landing. The same height advantage favors basketball players that being short favors gymnasts.

Just in terms of LSU basketball players, I thought Ronald Dupree was as athletic as anyone. Dude wasn't tall by basketball standards, but he dominated the boards, and flew around all over the place. Unfortunately, he was never a shot blocker like Tyrus. Ronald was the better offensive player.
Just in terms of their athleticism, I think they were quite comparable.
As far as all athletes, ever? That list is very long. There are certainly many who compare. I would have to think for quite a while to come up with an educated opinion on who was/is the most athletic.

I get the OP’s point. TT was a guy who was not that heavily recruited and all of a sudden grew into his body and it was awesome to watch!! We don’t go to final four without him. He was definitely a freak! Best athlete ever is a stretch, but his athleticism was insane to watch that one season!

This guy won the pentathlon and decathlon in 1912. Thorpe later played six seasons of Major League Baseball and 12 seasons of professional football and for two years served as the first president of the American Professional Football Association, the precursor to the National Football League. Thorpe led an American Indian basketball team on barnstorming tours. He even won the 1912 intercollegiate ballroom dancing championship.
