Points allowed is a random stat?

Baker is a tough one to judge, because where as he's top notch in man/man blitz situations, he is really terrible in zone concepts. My only real complaint is he is somewhat one dimensional. It's why there's such a discrepancy in games.

Situational awareness over the course of the game that factor into losing, or winning for that matter.

29.5 ppg is one drive? How did opponents manage to do that?
Against Kentucky, a punt return TD and a TD and 2 pt on OT
LSU defense gave up 20 in regulation against Kentucky and 32 to the potential Heisman winner in a road game from hell.
So that’s actually 26 ppg in those road games against a top 10 and top 15 team.
Not great in either case, but certainly enough to win either game considering the strength of our own offense and the relative strength of those defenses.

28* Baker doesn’t coach Special teams.

It’s 29.5, I didn’t count the punt return and the only reason we were in OT was because he couldn’t make a stop so that’s on him. Btw 0/4 in 2minute defense those two games.

But you counted overtime.
No one is saying the defense has been perfect and doesn’t shoulder heavy blame for the losses.
But the offense gave away opportunity after opportunity to take control or end both of those games when the defense was throwing consecutive stops their way for an entire half.
Both sides of the ball have improvements they can make, but the vitriol against a defense that has given the offense and our elite HC and OC multiple chances to win the games is just weird to me.
I’d rather those guys step up in critical situations than depend on the DC that no one thought would be the driver of this team or season to begin with

0-8 on the road cold hard facts the last 8 sec road games not to mention his normal yearly blowout at home every year . Word is good defense travels.

Not sure why all the downvotes..

We have played one really elite offense and one ok offense and we gave up an average of 33 points 0-2 .

Espn FPI is one of the best predictive models for predicting game outcomes and win/losses. It has LSU as the #1 defense in the country when accounting for opponent and non-garbage time stats, and it's not really close.
Vegas uses metrics like FPI to set odds, the computer has LSU with the #1 defense in the country with 3 of our best defensive players hurt.
Baker is doing something right.

So the offense didn't give us a 3 point lead with 1 36 remaining with UK on its own 19 with no timeout? Sam and the offense didnt give us a 7 point lead in overtime? Not on the D ? Still had a chance for Blake and the D but we couldnt stop the 2 pt conversion.. D goes 0-3 to win the game.

He’s had those 2 games where he mad bad decisions to play soft zone and it burned him. The same people complaining about that would be crucifying him if he went balls out all out blitz and LSU lost those games. LSU’s defensive stats are some of the best in the nation. Could he be better? Absolutely but at the same time his defense has been pretty good also overall.

You can’t give up 413.5ypg and 29.5ppg and win. You can’t give up 20+% higher than average on 3rd downs. You can’t give up 300 yards in a half, you can’t give up 4 straight scores. You have to get stops at the end of games when you have a lead. Not sure how you guys are rationalizing these things, no other DC in LSU history has been absolved of performances like this.

Games are 2 halves long, in those games we gave up 413.5 ypg ahd 29.5ppg. Just for reference Matt House first year he gave up 377.8 ypg and 25.5ppg on the road.
Matt House's first two SEC games he averaged 416.5 & 26. That was what would be a 5-7 Florida, with Anthony Richards at QB, and a 6-7 Auburn, with Robby Ashford at QB.
Context matters.

What context? House wasn’t good but now similar performances are being excused.

This isn't the '90. Teams don't put up only 200 yds/game anymore. Especially with Kiffin running the offense. I remember when we used to have these conversations about Aranda in 2019 too though.
Just let the season play out. It's year one under Kiffin. We're probably not going to win the natty, but things are trending in the right direction.

No other DC in history has had Lane Kiffin and CWJ calling plays for the offense.
I just feel like I expect more out of the offense under this regime than the DC

He handed Baker the lead late in both games. This reminds me of 2020 when the offense was scoring nearly 40 per game and getting blamed for losses early in the season.
Posted on 10/19/26 at 5:38 pm to Madking
You and I are going to disagree, and that’s okay, but if my head coach is Lane Kiffin, I expect to score at least 30 points a game in regulation.
I’m not expecting a defensive coordinator to have to hold teams to less than four touchdowns in order for us to win games.
There are two sides to every coin. You see a defense who failed at the end of the game. I see an offense who failed at the end of the game. In reality both are true.
