In evaluating a coach why should you really value how he performs when, after going undefeated and losing almost every starter and assistant coach, he doesn’t get a Spring with this all-new team because of a (hopefully) one-off external event?
Yes he lost Brady and Aranda. But his replacements for them were terrible. And his replacements for replacements weren’t any good either. This was the ultimate sign of his fate for me.
Yes he lost a ton of players. But we (he) had been recruiting at a high level and underperformed in 2020. Literally every other team in the country had to deal with COVID, so save that excuse. This whole “woe is me” stance that O was thrust blindly into the situation that unfolded in 2020 and 2021 is just silly. He recruited and ostensibly coached all of the players on those teams and hired all of the most critical coaches

The point on which I’m really with you is the 2021 coordinator debacle. I don’t understand hiring two guys who had never called plays.
There’s an art form and a learning curve to it, especially on offense - Brady was very forthcoming as to how invaluable E was in the booth.
In the end we’re arguing over one year. I would have told him his success bought him 2021, but he had to turn it around in a major way in 2022.
But hell, maybe Woodward did tell him that and just didn’t want to grind.

Part of the reason there was a “whole new starting lineup” is because Ed’s recruiting class in 2018 will go down as one of the worst in recent program history. Again, these aren’t problems outside of Ed’s control that were foisted upon him, they were of his own making. If a coach needs excuses in his fourth full year on the job, he’s not the solution.

There were some big misses yes. But Covid opt-outs, injuries, and an “allergic reaction” killed 2020 before it could get started.
Imagine the State and Mizzou games with Chase, Stingley, Vincent, Shelvin, and Farrell.
We start 3-0, Brennan stays healthy, and we probably go 8-2 or 9-1.

Would have still been a train wreck regardless.

Refute the argument.
There is no argument.

I don’t think any assistant coach on the upswing was hitching their wagon to O. I think they saw or were advised of the possible trainwreck. Brady was a low level Saints assistant and had nothing to lose when he came here. I didn’t and still don’t believe Freeman or Nielsen were ever coming here. I don’t care what the media said about being on the 1 yard line and Freeman’s wife deciding she didn’t want to live in the south. Then Nielsen not being able to get out of a contract when coaches do it all the time? I think both guys leveraged LSU to get what they really wanted.
Plus, even if they did, I don’t think another hotshot assistant would have hit it off with O anyway. You could tell he resented Brady and he damn sure resented Aranda. Also he had the dust up with Canada. He’s a petty, insecure jackwagon. It’s still funny to me that after all the resentment, he ended up getting references from both Brady and Aranda for last season’s coordinators.

This is the same guy that gave him that outrageous contract after 2019 ! O was’t going anywhere . He made him the second highest paid Coach behind Sabin when he knew he didn’t deserve that kind of money. A raise yes, but not that kind of money ! Now he says it was necessary to fire him. That actually reflects bad on Woodward. A huge screw-up on Woodward !
